CorePower Yoga’s instructors guide students through creative yoga classes that meld movement, breathing, and music into entrancing routines to energize the body and mind. Much like a butler with a teleportation pod, they welcome students at studios across the U.S., with locations in more than 10 different states. During the signature CorePower yoga class, teachers lead students through dynamic, Vinyasa-style flows with demonstration and verbal cues, helping pupils to tone core muscles and cultivate balance.
Most classes convene in a 90- to 95-degree room, which intensifies stretches, bolsters coordination, and melts stress. To foster full-body strength and cardiovascular health, some yoga workouts include the use of free weights to pump up heart rates.
Highlights of Rodrigo Clark's two-decade Brazilian jiu-jitsu career include training with Master Carlos Gracie, Jr., reaching 3rd-degree black belt status, and medaling at the World Nogi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship seven times. At Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy Santa Barbara, Clark shares his vast knowledge of the Gracie style of self-defense during programs for all ages and skill levels. His and his team's teachings don't just show students how to defend themselves, though. They can also boost self-esteem, burn calories, reduce stress, and improve one's ability to dice vegetables with their bare hand.
It's pretty rare that a workout is charitable, unless you work out by dead lifting kittens from trees. But that's the case at World Dance Santa Barbara, where 100% of the proceeds from class admission goes straight to charities. The instructors weave cardio exercise with music to tone clients' bodies at dance classes, and their money heads to charitable projects in Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Nepal, and surrounding Santa Barbara.
Stocked with strength-training machines and cardio equipment, ProForm Fitness & Training's 3,500-square-foot facility stays open 24/7. The neighborhood gym provides an unintimidating, motivational environment for meeting health goals such as losing a few pounds so you can fit into your high-school gorilla suit. ProForm further helps members transform their appearances through personal training, nutrition and weight management, and massage-therapy services.
Divinitree Yoga and Art Studio's instructors seek to share their passion with the community, creating a welcoming atmosphere for students of virtually any skill level or yogic persuasion. The classes encompass a range of styles, although flowing Vinyasa and Hatha sessions appear prominently throughout. The more advanced sections of these energetic practices encourage students to push themselves physically while still keeping a mindful awareness of their breathing and posture throughout.
Beyond the yoga mat, the instructors also keep themselves busy by hosting art classes for students' children and caring for their onsite garden, which grows organic produce and spare chakras.
At Santa Barbara Jujitsu Kai, Head Sensei Jay Kalisek and his staff teach students aged 16 and older the Danzan Ryu style of jujitsu. The martial art, which incorporates elements of judo, is a specialty of Sensei Kalisek, who has black belts in both judo and jujitsu. In addition to self-defense training, classes also include calisthenic exercises, and lessons on how to tumble without suffering injury or rolling into traffic.
