Core Conditioning CrossFit's trainers teach a fitness program similar to those used by police academies and military units. Despite this, their workouts remain accessible to most everyone. Four-week CrossFit programs help all sorts of individuals get in shape, from athletes to the elderly.
Trainers Joy DiPalma and Ken Cervera lead the workouts, which take place outdoors in open spaces. Both arrive at local parks backed by fitness certifications and the positive attitude of Robocop right after having his batteries changed. Surrounded by sunlight and trees, they lead an interval workout that combines elements of cardio, strength, flexibility, and core training.
Alliance Training Center's classes make students stronger in more ways than one. Instructors not only help clients reach peak fitness through CrossFit, but also arm students with the world-renowned self-defense techniques of Krav Maga. Both these activities qualify as "functional." For instance, CrossFit athletes focus on becoming experts at the kinds of movements that come naturally, as opposed to putting stress on their bodies with forced motions. For its part, Krav Maga teaches combat techniques that deal with real-world scenarios, including handling assailants who have knives or guns.
The trainers offer a few other equally practical programs to spice up the week so students don't have to turn to baffling Danish game shows for stimulation. Kettlebell courses provide a nice alternative to CrossFit's Olympic-style weight lifting. And Brazilian jiu-jitsu builds on Krav Maga's repertoire of strikes with potent grapples capable of taking larger opponents to the ground or locking up their limbs.
Helping people reach their fitness goals isn’t necessarily easy, but NASM-certified personal trainer and Level-1 CrossFit trainer Serj Khajadourian has a solid script to follow. Every day, he uses CrossFit’s workout of the day to lead an intense, full-body training session composed of functional exercises that can be tailored to any fitness level. Any given class at CrossFit Lifestyle may find exercisers performing deadlifts, squats, push-ups, or box jumps, or flipping oversized tires end-over-end across the facility’s artificial turf. After working up a sweat, clients can unwind in a locker room stocked with complimentary towels, a steam room, a sauna, a jacuzzi, showers, and a nice, cold polar bear.
With their emphasis on functional training, it's fitting that Golden State CrossFit has teamed up with Azubuike Boxing Academy?the brainchild of athlete and personal trainer Leyon Azubuike. Leyon has competed in sports including track, basketball, and football since he was in high school. After an injury prevented him from finishing out a season of football in college, he stuck around to coach his fellow teammates and helped several of them ascend to NFL careers. But Leyon's career took a different turn. He became a personal trainer and focused his efforts on boxing and self-defense, which led to his development of the Azubuike Boxing Academy. The program melds modern boxing techniques with conditioning during one-hour classes. To mix things up, instructors also incorporate equipment ranging from heavy bags and focus mitts to Concept2 rowing machines and cardboard cutouts of Muhammed Ali.
Steel Barbells' coaching trio brings a variety of backgrounds to their classes, including martial arts, stunt work, and bodybuilding. But all three share a single goal: to help their clients get into the best shape possible. They use the flexible, scalable exercises of CrossFit to concoct new routines each day, challenging students of all ages and ability levels with functional movements, interval cardio workouts, and free weight training.
Kevin Batmanyan lugs padded mats, weighted medicine balls, and thick, heavy ropes into the park. He’s greeted by an enthusiastic group of boot campers who stretch and warm up on the grass before Kevin starts their intense training session. He leads these small groups through challenging exercises that use plyometric exercises and intense bursts of cardio to build muscles and endurance. With a focus on team building and an abundance of natural energy, Kevin aims to make the sessions motivating and enjoyable.
