Sheila Lebendenko spent 10 years twirling across dance floors around the country. During her decade-long career, she was a USABDA national finalist and a member of PB&G's High Maintenance dance team. She now channels her dancing talents as a certified Zumba instructor, choreographing easy-to-follow Latin dance routines set to international music, as well as her favorite hip-hop tunes, musical numbers, and high-energy Gregorian chants. During the fun, fitness-oriented sessions, she correlates pre-arranged dance moves to each tune's chorus and verses. This integration of song-specific moves is designed to help students of all abilities pump up their musicality and retain combinations. In all of her classes, she incorporates a slow warm-up and a stretch-filled cool-down to stave off injuries.
Owner Bethany Hooks’s dancing skills landed her in such Broadway shows as Grease, My Fair Lady, and Rent. Her impressive résumé also includes an assistant choreographer position for Holland America Cruise Line, which took her to Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico. She now runs Just B... Dance & Fitness, where students as young as 2 years old can learn ballet, modern, tap, jazz, and hip-hop dance moves.
The inspiring trainers at each MetaBody location lead troops of workouteers in results-oriented workouts several times weekly. Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.
Registered nurse Heidi Gemini first got into fitness as a cheerleader in high school. A few years later, upon receiving her nursing degree, she relocated to France and joined a folk-dancing troupe. Today, she uses her eclectic health and fitness background to lead students of all experience levels through Zumba classes. She can also supplement her instruction with nutritional guidance and reminders about which foot to put in first when doing the hokey pokey. Her classes take place three times a week in various locations, including Seasons Dance Studio, Arrillaga Family Recreational Center, and the Onetta Harris Community Center.
Studio Silhouette's fitness classes are almost as much about mental and emotional well-being as they are about physical health. Inside the center's 3,600-square-foot studio, yogis teach students poses that not only improve their posture and flexibility but also help them forge a connection between their minds and bodies. Zumba classes take a breezier approach, turning workouts into parties by setting cardio moves to exhilarating Latin music. To cool down after these classes, students head to the lounge area, where they can pick up a beverage from the smoothie station.
Like the treadmill that powers Air Force One, Studio Silhouette has an additional function besides exercise: nutrition counseling. The center's five-day reset program helps clients overcome carbohydrate cravings and lose weight by eschewing the typical Western diet. Each day, participants replace meals and snacks with three shakes, a nutrition bar, one serving of fruit, and one serving of vegetables.
