The six women who perform hair, makeup, and wardrobe styling for FashionShots are truly an elite team: among them, their work has been featured in Vogue, on E!, at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and in Modern Salon magazine. Their impressive skill enables them to work on a variety of projects, from senior photos and boudoir shoots to headshots for aspiring models and commercial work.
Whatever the project, the complete hair-makeup-and-wardrobe experience is designed to make each client feel like a model for a day. Subjects will prep for their shoot by reviewing a Mood Board, an email from the photographer with suggestions for outfits, hair styles, and makeup. The day of, clients bring in 3-5 complete outfits, and will then be coached through the shoot by a photographer who is also a former model. Afterward, subjects will go through the images with the photographer, selecting their favorites for complete retouching and printing.
Yoga Co-Op specializes in Jivamukti, a Vinyasa form of Hatha yoga that inspired its first practitioners in 1984. Encompassing tenets beyond mat work, Jivamukti operates on a five-pronged philosophy that encompasses scripture, devotion, non-harming, music, and meditation. When students enter the facility, they first see a floor-to-ceiling mural of swirling pink, blue, and yellow that pops against black walls. The attention-grabbing art counterbalances the muted feel of the studio, however, where eggshell walls and simple green plants evoke simplicity and set the mood for the physical and spiritual lessons ahead. Seven classes challenge practitioners of varying experience levels, whether they're at the start of their yoga experience or have grown with their discipline. Among the courses, Spiritual Warrior keeps its busy students in mind with a 7:15 a.m. class time, and beginner Vinyasa introduces novices to slower-paced moves. Peace In/Peace Out aids in relaxation, and meditation classes put a Jivamukti spin on the ancient discipline.
The artists at Wine and Canvas awaken their students’ inner Rembrandts and Van Goghs with classes that pair a featured painting with specialty cocktails and wines. The mobile studio’s monthly calendar includes themed classes in which instructors expound on the nuances of painting Parisian street lamps, Japanese flowers, or Venetian cityscapes. The master painters—many of them local artists—provide step-by-step instructions while students mimic each stroke and periodically dip their brushes into glasses filled with crimson cabernet. Each of the studio’s various drink-friendly venues boasts a specialty libation selected to incite creativity or conversations with fellow painters. When the artistic frenzy concludes, students return home with a finished masterpiece large enough to conceal any wall safe or mirror portal.
The trainers at Xtreme Performance Fitness tailor-make fitness regimens with their clients’ goals in mind. Personal trainers help their charges shed stubborn pounds by not only challenging them in the gym, but also holding them accountable in the kitchen. They explain the proper amount of calories clients should consume to lose weight, including how many should be devoted to protein, fat, and carbs. Once that's taken care of, they turn their focus back to exercise, unleashing intense cardiovascular and strength-training routines. For those seeking an extra boost of encouragement, group fitness classes promise similar results but in a collaborative group environment.
At Fitness on Broughton, cardio equipment, free weights, and strength machines build lean muscles and burn off fat. For those who prefer group workouts, the gym offers a variety of classes including Pilates, yoga, boot camp, Zumba, Insanity, and TRX training. After a sweat session, head to the onsite steam rooms or hot tubs to relax tense muscles.
Although instructors Travis Clark and Jon Gillespie lead Southeast Photo Adventures's workshops and excursions, they share the teaching load with the shores of Tybee Island and the depths of Cloudland Canyon. Students shoot shoulder-to-shoulder with instructors amid these sprawls of striking Southeastern scenery, whether they're enrolled in 2.5-hour workshops, Foto Field Trips open to workshop grads, or weekend-long adventures. The field-trip-style outings are open to all skill levels, but beginners can also enhance their expertise in introductory courses on Photoshop, digital photography, and DSLR cameras' complex settings, which control everything from shutter speed to the tiny red light bulb behind each of our eyes.
