Arizona Mudathon prefers to make the challenge of inner and outer strength a messy one. An all-terrain obstacle course transitions from sloshing mud pits to hurdles to an imposing 10-foot wooden climbing wall. While racers kick up desert dust, their families and supporters cheer them on from the sidelines.
Generally, adulthood forces people to give up childish pleasure, robbing them of the joy associated with playing in puddles, unearthing hidden treasure, and being silly in public. Sierra Adventure Sports wants grownups to regress, if only for a day. In service of that goal, the company organizes a variety of novel races that range from city scavenger hunts for the casual adventurer to creative triathlon courses for the ambitious athlete.
Scavenger Blitz, for instance, turns exploring one's city into a fun, fast-paced race scattered with clues, obstacle courses, and riddles. Racers in teams of at least two scour the urban jungle in search of 12 clues, which can include challenges, riddles, or orders that need be completed before crossing the finish line. Some send racers hunting for a snapshot in front of a landmark, whereas others challenge them to complete some special feat, such as conquering an obstacle course on stilts. The Mad Mud Run challenges participants to sprint and frolic through a dirty and deliciously fun outdoor obstacle course littered with manmade obstructions such as cargo nets, hills of hay bales, monkey bars, and slimy mud pits. Extreme Heat Adventure Races combine equal parts triathlon and scavenger hunt to create a 10?12K journey filled with running, river rafting, and mystery challenges that could pit teams against anything from blindfolded puzzles to wall climbs. Most Sierra Adventure Sports events encourage racers to compete in costumes of all types save for gremlins, which multiply in water and unfairly dominate the timed results.
Arabian and Saddlebred show horses are the stars at the Pirate Performance ranch, where trainers specialize in showing styles ranging from halter to driving. A sandy, outdoor arena––including a round pen and plenty of turnouts––sets the stage for lessons in Western, English, sidesaddle, and Dudley Do-Right riding styles, and all training is tailored to ensure a healthy riding relationship between driver and steed.
Carl Sonder, MD is on a mission: to create beauty and happiness in a world often beset by strife. He has seen his fair share of the latter. After studying internal medicine at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Dr. Sonder served in the military as a general medical officer in Vietnam. His focus was on the treatment of severe burn injuries, and it was here that a lifelong passion for aesthetic medicine was born. After his military service, Dr. Sonder became board-certified in psychiatry and neurology, and practiced psychiatry and internal medicine in New York City for 25 years. Dr. Sonder then relocated to Arizona in 1999, and nurtured his interest in aesthetics with a series of courses and trainings in aesthetic technology and cosmetic procedures. He was recently elected to the American Academy of Hyperbaric Physicians after becoming certified in the use of the above-hospital-grade Khrunichev hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
Dr. Sonder now directs the team of doctors, nurses, and medical aestheticians at Regency Medical Spa. The clinical team combats signs of aging on the face with injectable fillers and Botox, and contours bodies with anti-cellulite mesotherapy sessions or LipoDissolve procedures. The reception area at the Phoenix facility boasts a large, reddish-brown painting that mirrors the rich red floors and accentuates the brown leather chairs. The Scottsdale site is also bedecked in soothing earth tones. Both locations offer a private concierge driver service to get clients home after treatments or acquaint extraterrestrials with local businesses.
Over 15 years of practicing dentistry Dr. Brandon Kroll has learned to emphasize conservative intervention in all his services, which range from general dental procedures to cutting-edge orthodontia. His attractive office, which boasts an upscale waiting room, in-room TV screens, and few if any malevolent ghosts, provides a comfortable environment that puts patients at ease.
To honor the mighty men and women who've given their all for the country, the 2014 Salute Our Troops Run puts running shoes on the ground in a scenic shuffle packed with pride. It's all for a good cause, too: the run benefits the Military Assistance Mission of Arizona in providing financial aid and morale for current Arizona active duty military, their families, and wounded warriors. With races in both Phoenix and Tucson, participants can absorb the scenery on the 5K run/walk or leapfrog over their next of kin in the family fun run. Afterward, achievers collect their awards and a festival for families features jump castles, crafts, a military honor wall, and a special military ceremony.
