With a client list that includes the likes of Dennis Quaid and Harry Connick, Jr. as well as 7-time LPGA Tour winner Danielle Ammaccapane, it’s safe to say PGA pro Ben Alexander has coached the best of the best. But his rarefied students need not speak for themselves; a contributor to Golf Digest, Golf Tips, and PGA Magazine, Ben was named Northern California PGA’s Teacher of the Year in 2004 and nominated for the same distinction on a national scale in 2008. In addition, Ben has released multiple instructional DVD’s, which showcase the uncanny ability to help golfers improve their game without abandoning their natural swing that drives every one of his lessons. Ben imparts his golf knowledge from Poppy Hills Golf Course, a scenic club set on the Monterey Peninsula famous for co-hosting the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991–2009.
Russell and Francis Joyce, the partners behind Joyce Vineyards, translate the philosophy of less is more into the world of wine. They gently guide grapes through the fermentation process, limiting their involvement so that each wine expresses a flavor true to the fruit and terroir it's derived from. They source the grapes from European-derived vines that Joyce planted in 1987 and also from partner vineyards spread throughout Monterey, Santa Lucia Highlands, and San Benito County. Visitors can sip the varietals in a contemporary tasting room or subscribe to the wine club for quarterly deliveries of recommended bottles.
Hefty cast-iron kettlebells work on more than just muscle tone, according to Iron Republic’s double-certified trainers. Kettlebells actually help improve the range of movement, even in the injured or aging. That’s thanks to the Primal Move, an exercise devised specifically for those experiencing pain linked to movement. The workout’s philosophy views the entire body as a single unit and focuses on teaching pupils how to move it as such. During private, semiprivate, or team-training kettlebell classes, students master the Primal Move basics while they eradicate fat and regain flexibility.
