The coaches at Cappy's Gym arm their students with ring-ready pugilism skills and endless encouragement. Boxing Fitness corrals small troupes in one-hour sessions designed to condition bodies without actual boxing competition. Classes focus on fortifying each fighter's foundations by first aligning posture to safely stack muscles and properly balance on traditional boxing stilts. Coaches help students shape up with medicine-ball drills, plyometric moves, and footwork drills to build lean muscle mass, and jump-rope routines raise heart rates with a hastened twist on a playground pastime. During punching practice, learn to time quick jabs at a speed bag or blast full-powered blows against the indifferent surface of a jaded heavy bag. Those that opt for a month at Cappy's can protect their wrists with stabilizing hand wraps as they take to the gym's equipment as often as desired.
Founder Heather Scearce started practicing Pilates in 1997 after she suffered a severe back injury in a car accident. As it turns out, Pilates became an essential factor in her recovery, fueling her desire to help others discover the beneficial exercise form for themselves. In addition to one-on-one sessions, Conscious Body Pilates now offers Barre and Group Reformer classes in their newly remodeled space. The classes are small and promise more elbow room for friends, families and sock-puppet troupes to workout in tandem.
Things are always looking up at Seattle Bouldering Project, a south city climbing gym where both indoor and outdoor rock climbers enjoy the challenging ascents. The space offers typical bouldering (rock climbing without harnesses or ropes, using only special climbing shoes and techniques to ascend) courses on any of their multi-level artificial climbing walls, plus bouldering classes for all skill levels. Seattle Bouldering Project focuses on climbers aged four to adult, with special times and programs for the little ones, plus all of the necessary safety precautions. Occasional climbers can buy a day pass for use of the entire sprawling facility, while avid climbers have a choice of membership levels. There are climbing shoes and crash pads for rent at the gym, and instructors also teach the occasional yoga and fitness class.
Breathe Hot Yoga's studios maintain a tropical climate regardless of the season. Though not as hot as traditional Bikram yoga, the studios maintain a balmy temperature for most classes, allowing muscles to remain loose and limber as students flow through sessions. Antibacterial, medical-grade vinyl flooring gives yogis the clean, steady surface they need to train excitable downward-facing dogs. After sessions, trainees can refresh and renew in Breathe Hot Yoga's onsite shower facilities.
Together, the KAF Adventures guides are dedicated to helping others experience the thrills of climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, and other outdoor escapades. Whether they're teaching beginners to rock climb during group lessons, imparting lifelong skills as private mountaineering guides, or leading international climbing trips, the guides help their students learn new skills and appreciate their surrounding environment. Yoga and backpacking hikes introduce hikers to wilderness vistas as they learn to channel their own breathing, and backcountry skiing and boarding guidance readies students to hit the slopes or speed through snowy department-store displays.
