The studio of CrossFit North Seattle pulses with high-intensity workout routines. As students undergo varied exercises from the scheduled Workout of the Day, owners and coaches, Seth and Dan circumnavigate the floor, guide movements, and ensure safety. Combining weightlifting, gymnastics, and track-and-field techniques, CrossFit aims to build resilience, strength, and versatility, equipping students with the stamina for athletic and everyday activities. Instructors scale each workout up or down to accommodate individual levels of fitness or exercisers recovering from restrictive injuries.

Breanne Pelkey and Jesse Aspuria are certified trainers with one goal: to improve the health of their clients. They guide people through outdoor boot camps, where exercisers are surrounded by oxygen-emitting trees, chirping birds, and English-speaking squirrels. Workouts are customized to challenge participants of all athletic abilities, and consist of interval and cross-circuit training exercises that utilize body-weight movements. The trainers also provide nutritional guidance for their clients, helping them further improve their health through a diet steeped in protein and candy canes.

A sign hangs over the entrance of MKG Martial Arts International: Leave your ego at the door. It’s the first indication of the group-minded, family-like camaraderie among the students and highly trained instructors, and it's a sentiment that holds true in each of the gym’s three areas of expertise—adult martial arts and kickboxing, cross-training fitness classes, and youth programs for tykes as young as 4. MKG's MAX10 Fitness & Boot Camp program challenges fitness-goers to reach new goals. Known as MAX, the 4,500-square-foot studio's cross-training classes help students get into shape during boot-camp- and kickboxing-inspired workouts. Sessions, such as Bag Combat or MAX Strength, torch calories and tone muscles while keeping boredom at bay with continuously changing routines and punching bags that explode into butterflies every time they’re hit.

MKG Seattle is a fitness triple threat. First come their martial-arts classes for adults and kids, in which students learn to jump, punch, and kick in styles from muay thai and kickboxing to the Filipino art of kali. Second, an intense MAX10 bootcamp uses martial-arts-inspired moves to build stamina and strength. Third, MKG Seattle dedicates 3,000 square feet of space to CrossFit, which co-owner Tammy Wilson originally picked up to supplement her Muay Thai training. Here, she and the other CrossFit coaches guide new and seasoned students through each daily-changing workout, adjusting weights and reps to ensure everyone is equally challenged. During any given workout of the day, students may perform functional movements like squatting with weighted barbells, swinging kettlebells, or leaping tall buildings in a single bound. The gym also offers childcare during select hours throughout the week.

Hot Yoga Inc. likes to see you sweat. Not due to exhaustion or struggle, but because the perspiration caused by their classes encourages mental tranquility, muscle toning, and physical detoxification. Hot Yoga Inc. sends warmth deep into the skin and tissues instead of just decorating their studio with a bunch of Sun stickers. These higher temperatures help foster a greater range of motion as students of all skill levels follow a flowing series of yoga postures. Basic Hatha classes soothe the mind with a rush of endorphins while losing weight and improving flexibility, and Power Yoga pushes students with more intense workouts that build strength.
