Nestled on the shores of the eponymous southern Florida lake, Lake Okeechobee Resort is an ideal base camp for outdoor recreation. Popular pursuits here include bass fishing, boating, and hiking or bicycling along a segment of the 1,400-mile Florida Trail that wends around the lake’s perimeter. You can set off into the lake from the resort’s 100-slip marina. From its location on the southeastern side of the lake, the resort has a spot to watch sunsets over the water.
For those camping, Lake Okeechobee Resort has especially long lots for oversized RVs or sleeping bags designed for giraffes. An onsite restaurant, public bathrooms, and pool take the edge off of roughing it while staying at the campground or in the cabins.
At Jungle Games Paintball, the acres of playing fields are littered with abandoned transport vehicles that set the stage for action-packed gaming. Defunct helicopters serve as sniping stations, and hollowed-out vans provide a place for opponents to duck for cover or take a break to plan their financial futures. As players navigate around trees in one of Extreme Paintball's six wooded fields, they take aim with rented Tippmann 98 markers upon catching sight of opponents. At Off the Wall Adventures, players explore 15 acres of play area, including a three-story fort and five-man speedball field designed to test players' stamina and skill.
There’s nothing like skimming across Lake Tohopekaliga’s surface, propelled by a 500hp fan. That’s the thrilling experience offered by the Wild Willy’s Airboat Tours, which drift in the gentle marsh to catch sights of great blue herons, 12-foot alligators, snails, and other native creatures. All the while, your guide will provide expert information on the lake and the surrounding terrain, plus help you spot the wildlife.
While other tour guides pack groups into 12-passenger boats, Wild Willy’s keeps it passenger numbers low to reduce weight and increase speed. Up to six guests can board one of the airboat, which sail past reeds and Spanish moss before. Afterwards, you can take pictures with resident baby gators Thunder and Half-Stripe in the visitors’ center. And safety is a major focus at Wild Willy’s—guests should arrive 15 minutes before their tour time to receive a Coast Guard-required talk about safety.

Captain Anthony Leverett, the man behind Kingdom Business Charters, has fished the waters around Tampa Bay for more than 15 years. After casting countless lines, he mastered the finer points of catching snapper, grouper, kingfish, and cobia. Today, he passes this expertise onto others during fishing charters aboard his deep blue, 1988 classic Pro-Line fishing boat. The vessel features an illuminated cockpit and underwater LED lights, which allow Captain Leverett to fish at night or on days when the sun calls in sick.
