Master-certified trainer Joe Ramirez’s ample experience and endless support for his fitness clientele caught the eye of the Gazette, which named him 2014’s Best Trainer as part of the paper’s annual Best of the Springs awards. By actuating fitness knowledge honed during 20 years in the business, Joe guides ladies through 60-minute, indoor boot-camp or kickboxing workouts that populate a robust weekly schedule. Kettlebells, resistance bands, and medicine balls sway and fly through the air during toning and firming exercises that chisel more muscles than Michelangelo after an inspirational viewing of Rambo.
During kickboxing, the curriculum takes a fight-centric turn. There ladies strike bags, dummies, and focus mitts, sharpening participants' self-defense skills. WBCF makes weight loss a priority in all of its classes, and Joe also heaps individual attention on each client during a consultation to set attainable goals.
When the design team Vertical Solutions entered the former church that now houses Pure Bouldering Gym, they made sure every guests' eyes would shoot upward. They created a climbing wall that leads climbers up a flowing artificial rock face that seamlessly integrates a 38-foot long bouldering cave and strength-testing overhangs, all lined with a layer of 12-inch ballistic floor padding to protect against injury. The main wall and a competition wall next door—complete with faces tilted between 2 and 65 degrees—keeps climbers entertained for days at a time, as they challenge themselves to new routes and remain on the lookout for freeloading mountain goats. Meanwhile, a staff of experienced coaches trains budding boulderers to master the climbing art, starting off with the fundamentals in The Basics class and continuing through more advanced topics in private lessons.
At Tiger Rock Academy of Colorado Springs, fitness stands on three legs. Combined, these are called Kisado, and like a tripod, if any one is taken away, the whole is likely to fall. The first leg is strictly physical—interval workouts that pair short, high-intensity, 8–20 second bursts with a phase of rest. Each movement incorporates punching bags, kettle bells, resistance bands, or body weight to scale difficulty to each individual participant. The second leg is called I-X Awareness, which focuses on bulking up mental strength through breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. The final leg, then, is nutrition, with coaches discussing the importance of following a well-rounded diet built on fruits and veggies instead of packing peanuts.
