When Simon Huber arrived in southern Indiana from Baden-Baden, Germany in 1843, he knew how to do two things particularly well: grow fruit and make wine. What started out as Simon's humble, 80-acre operation, today stretches across more than 600 acres as one of the state's oldest wineries. It remains a family business, too, with seventh-generation Hubers at the helm.
Open seven days per week, 12 months a year, the facility features u-pick fruits and veggies, a bakery, a cafe, and even a family farm park. All of this activity bustles above the wine cellar, which resides underground beneath the Huber's restored 1938 barn. There, the family transforms 18 different varieties of grapes into award-winning wines, combining modern equipment with old-world winemaking techniques.
Kelsay Farms continues its harvest-time tradition of opening its gates to the public, inviting families to engage in a cornucopia of autumnal activities. Guests can get an overview of the farming life during hayrack rides, or test their navigational skills in the five-acre corn maze where twists, turns, dead ends, and minotaurs lend a sense of excitement. Tykes can keep occupied with boisterous rounds of "Turkey in the Straw" in the straw play area, climb up Bale Mountain, or coo at adorable fledgling farm animals in the baby barnyard.
A kaleidoscopic spectrum of more than 3,400 colors dapples swatches, brushes, and fingertips at Southern Indiana Paint Supply, an all-purpose hub of home improvement. This official Benjamin Moore Signature Store stocks the iconic brand's major lines of residential and commercial paints alongside brushes, caulk, and other tools from trusted names such as 3M, Wooster, and DAP. The high-end Benjamin Moore Aura series' Color Lock technology infuses the paint's resins with vibrant pigments that resist chips, streaks, and scratches from pet porcupines, and the Natura interior waterborne paint’s Green Promise seal ensures that it meets strict environmental standards. Two of Southern Indiana Paint Supply's expert staffers rank among the world's 10,000 NACE-certified technicians, and the entire team works together to realize customers' dream hues and make tedious finger-paint applications a thing of the past.
If its full name––Two Fat Guys Summerfield Ace Hardware––isn't a clue about this store's unconventional nature, maybe its pet shop is. Or perhaps that distinction belongs to its owners' related endeavor: not only do Rick and Smokey inspire ambitious homeowners with rows of home-improvement implements, but they also encourage handiness by taking to the airwaves with a weekly hardware radio show. Summerfield Ace Hardware also doubles as a U-Haul Center, and animals are welcome, especially if they're able to drive a U-Haul but also if they just want to sniff around the pet shop. Prepping for barbecue season is a cinch on these premises: in the words of Rick and Smokey, "With a name like the Two Fat Guys you might expect that we have a complete grilling center and we offer assembly and delivery." Salespeople are trained to answer nearly any home-improvement question their customers ask, and a wide selection of hardware, paint, plumbing, and electrical supplies shares space with gifts, home decor, and housewares.
Though his licensed and insured tree-trimming crews expertly prune each tree and shrub, N & S Tree Service owner George Whirley still takes the time to review all residential and commercial projects to ensure the quality of work. During appointments, the staff members carefully cut back overgrown and unhealthy branches, remove unwanted trees, and grind up the stumps. They are also on call to clean up storm damage and dispose of wicked-witch casualties before they attract attention from the local news.
Lawn Doctor's roots lead back to the mid 1960s, when friends Bob Magda and Tony Giordano took on the endeavor of reviving uncared-for lawns in their hometown of Matawan, New Jersey. Their local business has since blossomed into a national franchise with more than 500 locations across the United States, each adhering to the mission of enhancing lawns' allure with time-tested techniques, dedicated customer service, and dabs of foundation makeup.
Before Lawn Doctor's assiduous staffers unleash expertise on swards, they arrive at the client's home for a complimentary consultation to gauge each lawn's specific needs. Grass gurus can thicken turf with their patented Turf Tamer power seeder and foster healthy growth for grass, trees, and shrubs with fertilizer. Uninvited lawn assailants—such as crickets, ants, and grazing neighbors—shudder at the sight of Lawn Doctor's pest-control experts. The company also helps to preserve Mother Nature's receding hairline with organic lawn treatments and natural, eco-friendly products.
