The Greensman's crack team of garden maintainers safeguards yards from colorless springs and chaotic appearances with both planting and cleaning services. Banish bothersome leaves and debris from autumnal kingdoms with a fall clean up led by a duo of Greensman’s garden-cultivating knights. The two-hour cleaning clears twigs and limbs, cleans up perennials, and hacks unruly bear-shaped hedges back into well-mannered topiaries. Though Greensman staffers can tidy up landscapes with a number of tools, the use of special equipment—including Bobcats, chainsaws, and T-shirt cannons filled with fertilizer—is not included.
Hedged by evergreen shrubs and flowering bushes, placid tide pools and trickling waterfalls flow into a deep, rocky basin. This backyard oasis is one of dozens of successful installations constructed by Rolling Meadows Landscape and Garden Center’s team of landscape artists. At their garden center, landscape experts of the same ilk assist guests with their own gardening endeavors. In addition to advice on landscape design, eco-friendly gardening goods, and the pros and cons of installing a moat made out of slip ‘n’ slides, Rolling Meadows’ team strives to empower local green thumbs with monthly educational classes and workshops.

What sets your business apart from your competition?
We are a farm anchored by our nursery, vineyard and winery.
What was the inspiration for starting this business?
A need to be connected to the earth is in every one of us. For me, great company and great wine in beautiful surroundings is as good as it gets.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Along with picking out some great nursery stock, the winery tasting room is open for sampling. There are a number of fun events coming up this spring. Be prepared for live music, our sheep being shorn, or an art event when you come out for the weekend. ... We grow trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses, but not annuals and vegetables. And, yes, you can call me Gilbert Grape.
What is the best reaction you?ve ever gotten from a customer?
It is so gratifying to see our products woven into the tapestry of people's lives. I have helped people pick out trees to celebrate new beginnings and also to remember those not with us. One day in the winery a couple came in celebrating their 30th anniversary. And they told me how their son had just proposed to their future daughter in law over a bottle of our wine. Love that.
What?s your favorite part about your job?
Walking through a beautiful nursery crop, or the vineyard before harvest, or opening the first bottle of a new vintage with customers in the tasting room is all equally fun. I also love seeing nursery stock we grew all over Kansas City.

Colonial Nursery has equipped gardeners with an extensive stock of blossoms, greenery, and landscaping products since 1969. Greenery gurus stand by to answer gardening questions and help shoppers navigate aisles brimming with annuals, perennials, and semimillennials. Apart from a Bing Crosby soundtrack at the mall, nothing says the holidays quite like the red, white, and marbled petals of potted poinsettia plants ($3.99–$18.99) or a christmas cactus ($12.39). Live spruces and pines ($65) rally seasonal sentiments, and bundles of firewood ($4.99) feed chimneys’ insatiable appetite for trees.
