A nonprofit organization, Midwest Freefall Sport Parachute Club aims to instill a love for skydiving in each person who steps into its 17-place Jet-Prop Cessna Grand Caravan, which elevates jumpers to more than 13,000 feet above the southeast Michigan countryside. Tandem jumps allow thrill-seekers to harvest cotton candy from clouds as seasoned instructors take care of dive essentials, including parachute deployment. For those who want to learn more, seven levels of free-fall training transform novices into experienced jumpers who can take solo dives. Before their second jump, skydivers become members of Midwest's club, which hosts social gatherings that debate the merits of traveling down stairs by parachute. Midwest Freefall Sport Parachute Club embraces the standards and procedures established by the United States Parachute Association to help ensure safety during all of its dives.
Voted No. 4 in the Top 10 Birthday Chains for Kid Birthday Parties in 2010 by Parents magazine, Pump It Up pulses with inflatable play sets and actually encourages kids to bounce off the walls. Within the indoor playground, a stalwart staff oversees the neighborhood of bounce houses and air-filled playthings, such as a classic bounce castle and slick inflatable slide that cushions children's heartfelt reenactments of Cool Runnings. Throughout the week, families can pop in for open play, or tote along their own mini entourage for birthday-party packages complete with private rooms and complimentary invites. Parties come as straightforward packages or as themed events that place the birthday child in structured story adventures where they take on the role of a mighty and clever superhero or pirate captain that drank too much saltwater.
While almost everything else that is five millennia old has fossilized, the ancient practice of yoga remains relevant. At The Yoga Studio of Shelby, teachers with a minimum of 200 training hours teach students the age-old art, which builds strength, enhances flexibility, and aids with stress management. The studio’s classes range from hot Vinyasa, which is a flowing style taught in an 85-degree room, to Hatha, where meditations help to clear students’ minds without making them forget their Social Security numbers. Expectant mothers can stretch with low-impact poses in prenatal-yoga classes. Studio workshops on partner yoga, meditation, and other specialty topics round out the schedule.
Within the walls of its warm and cozy studio, each of White Lotus Yoga Studio’s registered yoga instructors infuses lessons with a unique background in the practice, creating a diverse lineup of classes that spans the gamut of yoga. These seasoned leaders walk the floor during class to assist students in their form and to attain peaceful energy.
After performing as a soloist with the Metropolitan Ballet Society, Lori Burton sashayed out of her pointe shoes and down the avenue of her new, fiery passion. She took the Argentine tango circuit by storm, showing off her 25 years of dance experience on ESPN, PBS tango exhibitions, and in several well-known Detroit news publications. So infatuated was she with her fueling her soul as well as her knowledge of Argentine tango, she traveled to Buenos Aires twice a year to study with the art form's masters. It's this commitment to excellence that has garnered Lori numerous top teacher awards and a loyal following at Argentine Tango Detroit.
The light–footed headmaster recruited a team of experienced instructors to teach graceful dance steps and passionate partner work. They designed their private or group tango classes to benefit dancers of all abilities, guiding students through stylized moves and complex spins during beginners and advanced lessons. They also train feet to flit through salsa dance's high-energy moves, and lead private dance lessons so that students may conquer their crippling fear of dance shoes in peace. Weekly milongas, or open practice parties, offer students a chance to practice their new moves in a judgment-free environment. Argentine Tango Detroit also hosts a variety of accomplished guest instructors, who broaden students' horizons with their own unique dancing styles and perspectives.
