When Andromeda Stevens and Kelli Altounian founded Pilates Sports Center, they set out to create a studio that eschewed run-of-the-mill Pilates routines. To achieve this, they gathered a team of experienced fitness and Juilliard-trained dance instructors who teach a variety of inventive fitness classes, including Burn at the Barre, which uses a ballet barre and light weights to tone muscle, and Stretch & Stamina, which blends cardiovascular and endurance-training routines. In addition to offering reflexology, chiropractic, and physical-therapy treatments, Pilates Sports Center is home to a teacher-training program that nurtures aspiring Pilates and Burn at the Barre instructors.
Each week, the 32 lanes at Pinz sparkle beneath the strobe lights and disco balls of Shake, Rattle & Bowl. When they’re not glowing or being incubated by confused chickens, the bowling balls can be hurled by visitors and league bowlers alike, rolling swiftly past the 10-foot video screens that line the alley’s far wall. Behind the scoring table, in the VIP billiard room, plasma TVs help to ensure that guests can play pool without missing critical sports moments or any commercials starring famous cats. And in the on-site arcade, players can enjoy more than 40 games including air hockey, skee-ball, and video bowling.
In 1962, a nascent surfing culture drove hordes of teens to the beach and spawned pop iconography in the form of The Beach Boys' debut record, Surfin' Safari. That same year, the Richards family began a surfing expedition of their own, outfitting explorers of the Pacific waves under the banner of Val Surf. The shop has remained a family-owned haven of board-sports gear and apparel ever since, boasting bragging rights as the first-ever dealer of Quiksilver products and a partner with Burton Snowboards from its inception in 1977. Like beavers with master's degrees in woodworking, the staff’s passion is its profession, with surf-, snow-, and skate-enthusiast employees ready to match guests with proven brand-name gear from Volcom and Billabong or lesser-known offerings from up-and-comers such as Fourstar Clothing and RVCA.
Pilates Plus has brought the SPX fitness class's high-intensity blend of traditional Pilates and modern weight training to media outlets from the TV Guide channel to Shape magazine. At each 40- to 55-minute group session, Pilates pros show students how to cultivate strength, stamina, and prize-winning roses with a ProFormer machine, which works upper- and lower-body muscles through a system of springs and pulleys. Although old-school routines such as pushups and lunges tone the body, support from the ProFormer machine keeps pressure off the joints and spine so elbows don't go on strike in the middle of putting a warthog in a headlock. The Pilates component of the workout lengthens and enhances posture while keeping heart rates up and burning calories.

A friendly and well-versed staff can help to find the bike that suits your needs best, while providing service on the same ride for years from their service department in the back. And if you’re just looking for gear to get you prepped for your next ride, Beverly Hills Bike Shop’s got that, too.
