Atop the windswept crests of Lake Minnetonka and Lake Superior, Sail Away Sailing School's instructors lead lessons for all levels. They're certified by the American Sailing Association and trained in CPR and first aid, ensuring expertise and safety during aquatic adventures. Students can gain insight into their expertise during any of the eight courses offered. At first, sailing instructors take students out for Sailing Discovery classes where they learn the basics, take the helm, and decide if sailing is for them. The next step toward captaining a vessel are the basic keelboat or cruising courses, which teach in-depth safety, motoring, and sailing techniques.
With navigation mastered, instructors let students get even more adventurous with racing techniques classes, which cover racing starts, upwind advantage, downwind strategy, and how to outrun pirating mermaids. The advanced coastal cruising course includes overnight sailing and fire safety techniques, as well as what to do if someone goes overboard at nighttime. The team also gives private instruction and even arranges for a mix of vacation and schooling with Virgin Island courses.
Learning to fly doesn't have to require a pilot's license. At Rent Flyboards, the team allows visitors to experience the adrenaline rush of rocketing as high as 30 feet into the sky and cruising at speeds up to 18 miles per hour. Powerful jets of water shoot out from beneath the board while a pair of boots keep riders safely fastened in place. All it takes is a subtle lean or tilt to turn the board and handheld nozzles help provide even more stability as riders become accustomed to the thrill of effortlessly hovering at a comfortable level. From these heights, people have the opportunity to see their surroundings from a vantage point normally reserved for birds and fish plucked from the water by hungry birds.
For more than 30 years, County Cycles has been outfitting riders of all ages with bikes of all types. It provides customers with a wide range of gear and cycling accessories from parts and helmets to road and mountain bikes from brands such as Trek, Bianchi, and Felt. Its technicians are trained to work with bikes of all major brands, and can lubricate cables, adjust seats, and fix busted tires so that bikes can ride on their own instead of being pulled by horses.
A nine-hole course operated by the City of Roseville Department of Parks and Recreation, Roseville Cedarholm Golf Course stretches for 1,373 garden- and tree-lined yards alongside Zimmerman Lake. Each hole on the course is a par 3, which encourages beginners to enjoy a round without too much frustration, while more experienced players can work on honing their short game and bending shots around the trees. Most groups can squeeze a round into less than two hours, which allows for ample time to stop and smell the nearby rose gardens or compose a brief speech in honor of every lost ball.
Club swingers thrive on the tree-lined fairways of Chomonix's 6,596-yard course, where the flora and fauna of Minnesota's wilderness bespeak the course's location on the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes park reserve. Water hazards pepper seven holes, and sand traps camouflaged as golf-ball resorts add excitement to each shot. With a full bucket of balls, orb whackers can improve their form and distance on the driving range, and players can practice distinguishing between real holes and invisible wormholes on the putting green nearby. Golfers quash hunger with the clubhouse's grilled brats or burgers. The course experiences little or no winter-kill, so the local flora stays healthy all year long.
