Danielle Rivera, owner of Tru Massage Therapy, did not set out to become a massage therapist. "I like helping people," she says, and she did so for many years as a CNA in nursing homes. When she began to transition to a medical-assistant program, Rivera discovered her passion for massage. She got her massage license in 2008 and never looked back. Now, Rivera and a team of therapists provide 10 massage modalities and myriad spa services. In addition to botanical body wraps and waxing services, Rivera's talent for clinical massage has improved her patients' lives and her ability to open industrial-size jars of pickles. "I had a client that could only lift his arm 90 degrees, and after working on him. . . he could go up to 160 degrees." She has also provided relief for migraine sufferers. Clients who "were taking prescription pain meds. . . were able to cut down their prescriptions significantly" or repurpose them altogether into beaded necklaces.

For more than 20 years, Midwest Massage owner Sheldon Haas has been using his hands to help heal and relax clients by providing services backed by an average of 30 hours of continuing education each year. Beyond employing Swedish and deep-tissue techniques to thwart pain and tension, he uses his experience working for the Avera Mckennen Hospital and Wellness Center and Midwest Orthopedic Center to help correct chronic and difficult issues. Medical or ortho massage is one of his specialties and targets specific problem areas by working down through individual layers using a blend of deep tissue, myofacial release, and range of motion restoring methods. Whatever style of massage you choose, Sheldon takes care to customize each service to your individual preferences, listening carefully for cues to your desired level of pressure and softly reciting your favorite Walt Whitman poems entirely from memory.

Royal Table Massage owner Rebecca Herrmann moved her nine-year-old business into its current location so that she and her staff could impart relaxation to more clients at once—seven, to be precise. She and her staff have mastered therapeutic massages but also utilize massage’s rejuvenating principles in treatments for the face and body. The space’s turquoise-and-blue color scheme exudes serenity, easing clients into the services that tend to leave them feeling as relaxed as a rooster dining at a vegan restaurant.

More than a decade ago, Tiffany Roisum-Zeller—a former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl cheerleader—exchanged her pompons and rhinestones for the prestigious role of the squad's makeup consultant. Her tenure as the team's beauty specialist laid the groundwork for opening Beautiful You Aesthetics, a full-service spa with advanced skincare treatments and anti-aging technologies. Among the spa's age-defying offerings, microcurrent light therapy restores a youthful tone, and Iontophoresis Elastin Infusion Therapy repairs UV damage and firms skin. As a complement to the high-tech treatments, Roisum-Zeller offers standard services such as waxing, lash and brow tinting, and special-occasion makeup.

Lucinda Aluffi and Mary Nedved, licensed massage therapists at Scent-Sational Massage, see massage therapy as the jumping off point for their forays into total relaxation. They start with a foundation of traditional techniques, including hot stone, deep tissue, or reflexology massage. From there, they customize the session to focus on what ails each specific client, and work in perks such as soothing aromatherapy oils. They even offer Reiki energy healing?a calming alternative to massage for folks who aren't too keen on getting touched. Facials and waxing round out the menu, and the spa's flexible hours and tranquil environment do their part to add to the serenity.

At Tranquility Therapeutic Massage, Theresa Switzenberg and her staff can inspire calm and they can subdue pain. It all comes down to which kind of massage you select. For example, a Swedish or hot-stone massage can melt away stress, whereas a deep-tissue or sports massage tackle sources of aches and speed the healing process. Another perk of Tranquility's massages is that they're available every day until 7 p.m., perfect for clients with busy work schedules or five-hour brunch obligations.
