Rhode Island Bartending School prepares its students for real-world employment by giving them the practical skills they will need on both sides of the bar. During the 28-hour training courses, the instructors combine short lectures with plenty of hands-on practice during classes with no more than 20 students. Attendees learn to create 50 popular cocktails using the fully stocked practice bar's assortment of simulated spirits and imaginary ice cubes. Additionally, these courses cover day-to-day skills, such as bar management, inventory control, customer-service techniques, and a thorough understanding of different types of beer, liquors, and wines.

The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous centers understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of a skills assessment using diagnostic tools and one-on-one interviews.

Tutors work with students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. Camps and after-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.

A simple sewing tutorial from Mikala Cash's grandmother at age six sparked a passion in the Creative Sewing Lessons' founder that continues to smolder after an education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. At her North Attleboro studio, Mikala guides students of various levels through a range of classes, including tailoring, invisible zippers, and sewing for kids, which arms youngsters with the know-how to construct business suits for lemonade stand conventions. In addition to her sewing classes, Mikala invites guest artists to lead workshops during her Creative Night Out series, a monthly event that introduces participants to hands-on subjects such as visual journaling and knitting.

Professional School of Bartending has taught the art of cocktail creation to more than 10,000 bartenders since the school's inception in 1977. Inside the lounge-inspired training facility, instructors teach the necessary bartending skills ranging from exotic and traditional mixology to responsible customer service.

Graduates of the comprehensive program benefit from a lifetime job-placement-assistance program that has blossomed from a regional effort to a coast-to-coast hunt. Besides ensuring a smooth transition from graduation to career, the school has an open-door policy that leaves the light on for all graduates: former students can repeat any class free of charge helping them to revamp their mixology skills or recall how to skewer an olive without making it scream. Professional School of Bartending also streamlines local businesses' day-to-day operations by lending out its training methods and expertise through its consulting services.

Choose from any of Learning Connection's one- to three-hour classes to break into culinarians’ lockbox full of ways to turn simple ingredients into visually appealing, mouth-watering fare. Learn bread-making basics and experiment with take-home recipes for loaves, pizzas, and pretzels to master the art of artisan bread ($55). Vegetarian cooking for everyone ($60) shatters misconceived misconceptions that vegetarian dishes are made mainly from plants and recycled cardboard; budding chefs discover new sources of protein such as tempeh and soy. The wines of Italy course ($57) transports palates to a balmy Italian sunset with five wine tastings from regions such as Tuscany, Umbria, and Piedmont. In this class, novice and experienced tasters will pick up tips on what to look for when purchasing wine, how to serve wine, how to taste wine, and what type of nose is best for sniffing wine.

Since 1992, the Providence Latin American Film Festival has been lauded for showcasing Latin American, Portuguese, and Spanish feature films, shorts, documentaries, and animations. This year's lineup of 10 moving pictures explores film as a vehicle for expressing and understanding the Latin American experience, from the documentary No Woman, No Cry on the struggles of pregnant women to Hora Cero, an action-packed heist film set in Venezuela. VIPs have access to every film in the lineup, as well as to art exhibits, panel discussions, filmmaker-led workshops, and popcorn-nibbling lessons. With passes to the opening or closing night's soirees, attendees may carouse with the festival's board of directors, corporate sponsors, and party-hat-wearing projectors while munching on appetizers and celebratory cuisine. The opening-night after-party kicks cinematic things off at Roots Café, where invite holders will receive a drink ticket, and Temple Restaurant hosts the closing-night party.
