Mike Tarascio's life changed forever in 1981 when a business partner offered him a ride to a conference in New Jersey—not in a town car or on a tandem bicycle, but in a small private airplane. The very next year, Mike bought an airplane of his own and founded the business that would eventually become Ventura Aviation. Today, he, his wife, and their sons operate their business out of Republic Airport, where they use their fleet of Learjets, Piper Warriors, and a helicopter to train a new generation of skyborne adventurers. Their goal is to introduce clients to the limitless lifestyle and freedom that comes with personal aviation, and inspire others to make the life-changing decision to learn to fly.

At Skydive South Shore, Inc., the best part of skydiving could be the adrenaline rush—or it could be the panoramic views of the Atlantic, Westhampton Beach, and the Long Island Sound. Based out of Brookhaven-Calabro Airport in Shirley, the New York City–proximate skydiving center is ideally situated to showcase these views on its tandem dives. After jumping, instructor-and-diver duos segue smoothly from free fall to a peaceful parachute flight guided by dual controls.

From a perch on Long Island, airplanes cruise high above some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, including the sapphire waves of the Atlantic and the beaches of the Hamptons. But, though the views from the plane are pretty, the experience of soaring through the air above them is unforgettable. Just ask 516 Skydive’s team of experienced instructors. They specialize exclusively in tandem jumps, making skydiving accessible and approachable to all jumpers, regardless of experience level. The staff keeps them safe by adhering to the strict standards of the United States Parachute Association, which enforces rigorous regulations, safety guidelines, and Top Gun code names for instructors.

The bird's eye views of the Atlantic coastline, the Hamptons, and Fire Island are compelling enough, but that's only the beginning for visitors to Long Island Skydiving Center, which has enabled tens of thousands of jumps during more than a decade in business. After ascending thousands of feet, each guest is securely attached to a highly trained instructor of the United States Parachute Association before leaping out of a plane and free falling up to 40 seconds at 120 miles per hour. Then the parachute deploys, and jumpers enjoy a picturesque descent back to earth. Long Island Skydiving Center also offers video and photography services for an additional fee, which means you can share your skydive experience with friends and family and taunt your least favorite flightless bird for years to come.

For the past 34 years, Soaring Adventures of America has presented earth-bound clients a variety of ways to explore the skies. First, their balloon rides take crews of up to four on a peaceful journey to heights as high as 2,000 feet in the air, capped off with a champagne or fruit juice toast. The pilots are FAA commercially certified, and the balloons are inspected for every 100 hours of flight to ensure a safe experience. More adventures are to be had on glider rides where passengers get the chance to grab the throttle and make their own way through any clouds or misspelled skywriting. For a maximum adrenaline rush, though, there's no better option than a tandem skydive and the raw thrill of falling 13,000 feet.
