Since 2006, Academy Ballroom Atlanta's instructors have helped competitive and social dancers two-step toward mastery of ballroom and Latin dance styles. Their classes range in style from the fiery moves of salsa to the elegant steps of the waltz to the boisterous footwork of swing, all of which can be scaled to suit varying abilities. During private lessons, the teachers' personalized attention helps develop each pupil's dance floor skills before they improve their patterns and techniques among peers at group classes. Those lessons culminate in group practice sessions, during which guests review their newfound moves while making an effort not to dip their partner into another dimension. Along with in-studio training, Academy Ballroom Atlanta hosts monthly semiformal dance parties, and its performance company, Atlanta Ballroom Dance Theater, wows crowds with shows—up to 90 minutes long—performed by professional and pro-am dancers.
Within a neon-colored lair packed end-to-end with colorfully flashing games, GameRoom’s arcade master invite players of all ages to plunk down their tokens for a chance to experience games as they were meant to be played. Classics such as skee ball and claw machines reward skill with handsome prizes, and driving simulators and action games impress with modern graphics and head-to-head competition. Once the games are through, competitors can retire to the onsite Johnny Rocket's complete with 28 flat-screen HDTVs or tell their defeated friends which toppings to choose at the frozen yogurt shop.
Dinner With The Mob's cast of seedy characters engages audiences with an evening of laughs, intrigue, and suspense in an interactive murder-mystery performance paired with a three-course meal. Members of the talented troupe have sharpened dramatic slaying skills on the small screen in CSI and Criminal Minds, and a Grammy-winning music director adds tense tunes to each whodunit. Sugo Restaurant’s blood-red walls and antique photos serve as a swanky backdrop to the PG-13 show’s mob-related crimes and post-curtain-call algebra quiz.
As children, two brothers witnessed firsthand the violence that can destroy a home. As adults, the vowed that their daughters would never suffer the same fate. That’s why they founded Divas In Defense, a safe haven for girls and women to learn self-defense techniques. At their personal-safety classes and self-defense workshops, healthy self-esteem and mental strength develop naturally as women learn how to use their own bodies or those of any nearby mannequins to defend themselves. Trainers hone simple strikes and kicks at beginner classes, which evolve into ground techniques at intermediate classes and defense against armed attackers at advanced classes. Their Girls Can Fight Too! program welcomes students as young as 7 to learn how to stave off bullying, date violence, and interact appropriately online, among other skills.
