A full-service gear and instruction shop, Leland Fly Fishing casts fledgling cod catchers into the heart of small-stream adventure with its introductory fly-fishing lessons. Each lesson acquaints amateur anglers with rod, line, fly, and fish during two hours of small-group instruction. Taught on the ranch's private trout lakes, the class covers basic terminology and strategy, as well as a seven-step technique progression to build the perfect cast for hauling in plaque-worthy piscean prizes and sunken mini fridges. Hands-on coaching ensures that each lure launcher leaves with an understanding of fly casting, fly-line construction, and leader tapering, laying a solid base for continued hours of self-practice. Students will be strapped with all the necessary equipment for their first round of line flinging and duck debating, and previously experienced bait pitchers are welcome to bring their own. Classes are held Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Perennial award winners at the San Francisco International Wine Competition, the vintners at Meadowcroft Wines craft a selection of 17 wines and lead guests in informative wine tastings. A 30-minute tasting allows oenophiles to sample a variety of Meadowcroft's reserve wines, including its 2009 chardonnay, a retro burgundian-style wine with citrus and hazelnut aromatics, and its 2008 cabernet, which tastes like wine. During the tasting, held in Meadowcroft's wine garden, the vino will be paired with a selection of local charcuterie samplings and artisanal cheeses, known as the peanut butter to wine's jelly. Afterward, tasters take home a bottle of Meadowcroft reserve wine. Tastings are scheduled daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
In 1976, two UC Davis graduate students bought 20 acres of land in the highly arable Capay Valley. One of the students, Kathleen Barsotti, was working toward her master's degree in ecology and was determined to grow vegetables and fruits in an eco-friendly way: organically. The organic-food movement hadn't yet entered the public consciousness, and Kathleen worked overtime to convince restaurants, stores, and consumers of the taste-able merits of her process. Over time, given the possible health and environmental benefits of certified organic food, she succeeded. The farm sprouted to 300 acres to accommodate the increased demand. Today, a second generation runs the farm as well as a shop inside San Francisco's Ferry Building. Dubbed Farm Fresh To You, the store furnishes customers' bags or portable cornucopia horns with all sorts of soil-sprouted goods, including heirloom tomatoes, sweet peas, and fresh asparagus. The farm also teams up with fellow Yolo County and Pacific Northwest farms to deliver boxes of seasonal produce to area homes.
The gardening gurus at Cottage Gardens of Petaluma grow all of the plants that they sell onsite, including the year-round vegetable garden and annuals. That means they can not only vouch for each plant’s health and acclimation to the area’s climate, but they are happy to advise budding gardeners on how to properly care for each plant. They can point shoppers toward bee-friendly perennials, for instance, or help them choose brassica veggies for an autumn harvest. Cottage Gardens of Petaluma also carries dozens of succulents, from the leafy crassula variety to a sturdy aloe plant.
In addition to plants, the nursery stocks a variety of soil fortifiers, such as nutrients and hardhats for earthworms. It also empowers green thumbs to beautify gardens with accessories including sculptures, terra-cotta planters, and baskets. Guests are also welcome to peruse the grounds to simply enjoy the beauty.
For more than three decades, ABC Tree Farms have provided the Bay Area with seasonal fun October through December. Summer inspires the first round of recreation in the form of Summer Fun Zones packed with inflatable bounce houses masquerading as castles and slides and fresh harvests of local cherries, peaches, melons, and other fruits. During October, they run 20 pumpkin-themed locations, some of which also feature inflatable bounce houses and other attractions. Once Thanksgiving passes, groves of Christmas trees spring up, having made their way south from Oregon and Washington. There they will stand until Christmas Eve, hoping to decorate homes or become the model that inspires a revamped line of evergreen air fresheners.
