Charlestowne Pub Stroll's knowledgeable guides cover nearly 300 years of history during their three-hour walking tours, shedding light on the city's libation-steeped past. Guide dressed in full pirate or colonial regalia lead guests along Meeting Street as they point out the area’s most historically significant pubs. They regale guests with tales of Prohibition-era criminals, early drinking habits, and other historical oddities, including that time when drinking a full gallon of milk was temporarily outlawed in Charleston in the 1900s. Throughout the tour, groups will stop into select watering holes to sample the storied brews for themselves at an extra cost.
Of dogs, Mark Twain once said, “The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man’s.” Cats, he claimed, were “the cleanest, cunningest, and most intelligent things I know.” Most pet owners think like Twain—believing their pets to exist somewhere between royalty and deity. Nicola and Chris Salt, owners of The Grooming Room Pet Spa LLC, aim to treat each furry client accordingly, and will work with all breeds, from purebreds to dogs they suspect are actually small men in dog suits.
The Salts approach each treatment like it’s their first, meticulously gathering background information on each new pet before they proceed. Then, within their clean, cheerful salon, they spruce up cats and dogs with comprehensive baths, hot-oil treatments, and facials. Client comfort is their top priority, so they tailor treatments to give extra table time to seniors and to calm nervous animals. The proprietors also aim for environmental friendliness, with a hand-selected collection of all-natural products from top brands such as Eagle Pack, Angels' Eyes, and Dead Sea Mineral Mud treatment.
To owners Rosanne and Tom Hayes, For Pet's Sake is more of a motto than a business name. Rosanne, a registered nurse, gives pets the same love, care, and scratches behind the ear every family member deserves. With her husband Tom, she eliminates the stress and anxiety pets experience at kennels, opting instead to take care of dogs and cats in their own homes. When owners are away, the pet sitters play with furry family members, take them for walks, and administer any required medications.
Back at their brick-and-mortar shop, For Pet's Sake's groomers—each of whom has at least 20 years experience—ready pets for daily gambols or formal dinner parties, using hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners to silken coats and never caging animals.
