Whenever Amber Roberge was feeling stressed, sad, or lonely, she would slip into her dancing shoes and head to Zumba class. Once the lively latin rhythms began to play and Amber began to dance, she would forget her troubles and feel her energy soar. Hoping to spread Zumba’s grin-inducing effects with her community, Amber went on to spearhead a Zumba studio of her own—On The Move Fitness & Wellness.
Amid the bright-colored walls of the warm space, Amber and her team of fellow licensed instructors lead students through energetic Zumba workouts. Lively latin and international gospel music fills the air as the group tackles various steps, spins, and body-sculpting exercises. When describing the classes to reporters from South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Sentry, Amber explained, “It is not about getting the moves down perfectly. I only have two rules for my classes. One: keep moving; and two: have fun!” Amber and her instructors welcome students of all ages and experience levels, even offering specialty classes for seniors and kids. Dedicated to fostering healthy habits beyond the classroom, the staff stocks the studio with nutritional products and hosts wellness workshops to discourage unhealthy habits, such as eating processed foods or insisting that your goldfish is your only friend.

The instructors of Greener Postures Yoga welcome practitioners of all ability levels, leading through Vinyasa yoga that treats breath as students’ guide through dynamic poses. Greener Postures Yoga has also recently opened a new location in West Falmouth which allows them to offer a new range of classes including kids yoga, prenatal yoga, deep stretch yoga, and restorative yoga. Both expansive studios are heated to 95–100 degrees and retain their humidity, which enhances Vinyasa’s heat-generating flows and encourages detoxification through sweat and increased circulation.
At ZUJA Wellness, instructors help students of all levels strengthen their body, mind, and spirit with a diverse medley of fitness and wellness classes and personal training sessions. Each of their group classes focuses on core strengthening, stabilization, and balance biomechanics—with instructors on hand to make modifications to better suit students’ abilities. They turn the focus to quieting the mind during yoga sessions, which are performed on mats or suspended in fabric hammocks. In addition to hosting a variety of wellness workshops, the center helps reduce tension and stress through massage therapy and reflexology services.
In a mezzanine area flooded with natural light from arced windows, cardio machines stand alongside free weights and strength-training equipment, ready to help exercisers combat calories and stress levels. Instructors, meanwhile, inspire participants to reach their fitness goals during group fitness classes set to upbeat music, while yoga teachers promote a stronger mind-body connection with styles ranging from breath-focused Vinyasa to energetic prana flow. For more in-depth work, guests can work with trainers certified by the likes of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. The crew also includes registered nurse Maria Glad, whose 12-week and 12-month wellness programs complement the club's fitness activities.
Staffers at the organic, raw-food juice and smoothie bar stand by to whip up a healthy and satisfying snack after workouts, while vapor from the locker rooms’ sauna and steam room loosens muscles.
The experienced instructors at Springboard Pilates bolster cores in individualized sessions that challenge students' muscles on both mats and machines. Under an instructor’s careful guidance, torsos and limbs learn new muscle-toning movements to help push themselves to better fitness during a 50-minute private session, acclimating to Peak Pilates equipment including the Reformer, the ladder barrel, and the Wunda chair. When teamed with mat work, these resistance contraptions expand pupil's repertoire of gut-crunching moves beyond sit-ups and playing the board on Monopoly night. Springboard's staff customizes all classes to account for student's goals, past injuries, and aversion to spring-loaded machinery stemming from traumatic childhood slinky experiences. Nestled in an 1846 townhouse, Springboard’s studio warms tense joints with red walls and decorative fireplaces.
