Located in the rolling hills of South Riding, Virginia, South Riding Golf Club's 18-hole, championship-caliber course is the only golf course in northern Virginia created by renowned designer Dan Maples. Intended to engage the community, South Riding Golf Club's 18 holes wind through open spaces, between wetlands, and around existing buildings. Today's deal alleviates fears of getting lost on the course with just a jar of peanut butter and a copy of Rodney Dangerfield's autobiography, because South Riding's golf carts come equipped with ParView color GPS systems. Grab your directionally challenged golf pants and enjoy driving through your globally positioned 18-hole jaunt.
The ultramodern Arlington Center for Dentistry looks more like a spaceship than a dentist's office. Sliding glass doors give way to a private waiting room equipped with a flat-screen TV and bright-red leather couch. Beyond its translucent walls, massive pillars painted gold and bright green pepper the path to the reception desk, interspersed with more flat-screen TVs to entertain patients perched upon circular benches that look as though they might lift into the sky at any moment.
The smooth, corner-less aesthetic hints at the state-of-the-art treatments administered beyond the waiting room, where seven experienced doctors––among them dentists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, endodontists, and pedondontists––strive to ensure a healthy, happy future for each smile. With an emphasis on creating lasting doctor/patient relationships, they gently guide mouths on custom treatment plans that can include everything from invisible braces to chip-covering Lumineers. Full-mouth and panoramic radiographs combine with comprehensive periodontal charting and bite analysis to pinpoint problems with precision, and model wax-ups of teeth present a mockup of how teeth will look after cosmetic treatments or if they fail to give up their candle-snacking habit.
CEO Peter Harvey believes that a quality gym staff must demonstrate more than technical expertise. "Service doesn't only mean showing someone how to do an arm curl," he says. Certified personal trainers develop workouts that zero in on each person’s specific goals, giving clients the skills to pole-vault over impassable plateaus. By steadfastly refusing to hand out fish in favor of putting on master classes in fishing, they help clients become self-sufficient, educating them on fundamentals.
During these one-on-one sessions, and in solo workouts, guests set calories ablaze atop rows of continually updated equipment. Treadmills, recumbent bikes, and strength-training tools line the walls.
Members can also drop in for as many group classes as they can muster. Inside a separate studio, stationary cycles whir in time with galvanizing music, kickboxing strikes arc through the air, and barbells rise with each BodyPump rep. For more meditative practices, Pilates sessions and several types of yoga enhance flexibility and focus.
When 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell—a fixture among the top 20 golfers in the world for the past three years—needs a bit of swing advice, he often turns to his friend and frequent playing partner, John O'Leary. The head of his eponymous Golf Academy, O'Leary began coaching after experiencing his own share of success in the professional ranks, where he won 15 PGA and mini-tour events and earned a berth in the 2007 PGA Championship. While he occasionally jousts putters with some of the world's top golfers, John's instructional style embraces players of all ages and abilities. With an emphasis on fundamentals and fun, he helps golfers hone everything from swings that produce long, straight drives to strokes that consistently hole short putts. John also makes use of V1 Video Swing analysis and CG2 Launch Monitor by Foresight Sports during lessons, camps, and clinics, allowing his students to see their swing firsthand and determine if they missed a belt loop.
Course designer Tom Clark of Ault, Clark, & Associates earned Pleasant Valley Golf Club a 4.5-star rating from Golf Digest, whose editors applauded the architect’s creativity in the site’s rolling hills and dense hardwood forest. Clark’s 18-hole brainchild allows players to tee up from one of four tee boxes and test their mettle against the par 72 course, taking care to avoid the water in play on six holes and the grassy meadows that lie outside the fairway borders. Players can bookend their round with a warm-up session on the range and a cooldown at the grill, helped along by a club sandwich, a Gatorade, or a glass of ice water dumped on an overused foot wedge.
