Within the verdant expanse of Burlingame Golf Center’s practice facilities, instructor Dave Atchison, who attained his PGA Class A status in 1981, imparts score-shaving tips to pupils of all ages and abilities. After demonstrating his passion for golf each morning by shaving with a sharpened divot tool, Dave heads to the golf center to showcase club-swinging skills that have fueled his 33-year teaching career, which has included six seasons of coaching at UCLA and another seven at UC Santa Barbara. With a full-length driving range, practice areas for chipping and pitching, and a sandtrap for bunker shots and makeshift hourglass construction, Burlingame Golf Center helps Dave and his clients foster improvements in all facets of the game.
Since graduating from UC San Francisco's School of Dentistry, Dr. Nahid Saba has spent 15 years keeping mouths and teeth around the Bay Area healthy. She and her team of dental hygienists stay in step with the advancing science of dentistry through continuing education, and they perform preventive, cosmetic, and restorative treatments for children and adults. Whether they're replacing missing teeth with implants, straightening smiles with Invisalign’s clear plastic aligners, or installing new tongues that will use fewer curse words, the team puts patient comfort first and listen closely to clients' concerns.
Iosif and Ella Meluta’s son, Alex, was diagnosed with asthma when he was 6 years old. To combat the disease, the Melutas sought out the therapeutic effects of salty air, taking him on seaside vacations, visiting salt rooms throughout the United States and Canada, and traveling to Eastern Europe’s salt mines. Eventually, Iosif and Ella created a salt-infused microclimate right in Detroit, the Salinair Salt Room, which Alex could incorporate into his everyday life. Nowadays, thanks to regular salt-room sessions, Alex is pursuing his dream of playing pro tennis.
The salt room’s healing properties are not just available to Alex. Clients of all ages who are struggling with conditions such as asthma, common colds, and stress can lounge in its zero-gravity chairs as they nap or surf the web during halotherapy. The therapy simply entails breathing the room’s air, which is suffused with salt microparticles and negative ions that soothe respiratory systems. As sessions unfold, adults can enjoy the relaxing effects of dimmed colored lights and music, and kids can play with Alex and his stash of toys.
Serves and volleys fill the room with the thwack of paddles, which send orbs on an airborne path across 10 regulation-size tables at Peninsula Table Tennis Club. Monthly memberships allow patrons unlimited access to the fleet of tables to hone skills and baffle opponents with perfectly timed smashes. The drop-in passes can be used by one player or split among cohorts for a day of friendly competition without the hassle of making enough chocolate pudding for home pudding-wrestling matches.
Founded in 2000, the Burlingame Aquatic Club initially catered exclusively to competitive athletes, many of whom rose to win several swimming events and earn spots on Olympic Development teams. In 2011, the City of Burlingame recognized the nonprofit's successful track record by granting it management of all the aquatic programs run from the facility (except for high-school athletics), allowing the club to now host open swims, lessons, and community events. Visitors of all ages and experience levels can glide down the 50-meter lanes of the outdoor, Olympic-size pool, or acclimate to the water in a wading area. They can also splash away calories in aqua-aerobics classes, or learn how to yell "shark!" in semaphore during CPR and lifeguard training.
