Born from the imaginations of two brothers running a flower shop, Edible Arrangements has grown from a single neighborhood storefront in Waltham, Massachusetts, to more than 1,100 locations throughout the globe, sending clusters of fresh fruit to deserving loved ones throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Produce artisans arrange delicious bundles of candy-dipped apples, strawberries, and bananas alongside carved melon slices and morsels of orange, grape, and berry, combining the eye-catching color of a floral bouquet with every human's unconscious desire to feast on that bouquet. Guests stop in the store to enjoy fresh-fruit smoothies and salads or pick up baskets to present to sweethearts, friends, or family in person. For web-based gift giving, helpful package tracking allows customers to keep tabs on their remotely ordered bounties of seasonal citrus bouquets and cocoa-covered berries.

In 1976, two UC Davis graduate students bought 20 acres of land in the highly arable Capay Valley. One of the students, Kathleen Barsotti, was working toward her master's degree in ecology and was determined to grow vegetables and fruits in an eco-friendly way: organically. The organic-food movement hadn't yet entered the public consciousness, and Kathleen worked overtime to convince restaurants, stores, and consumers of the taste-able merits of her process. Over time, given the possible health and environmental benefits of certified organic food, she succeeded. The farm sprouted to 300 acres to accommodate the increased demand. Today, a second generation runs the farm as well as a shop inside San Francisco's Ferry Building. Dubbed Farm Fresh To You, the store furnishes customers' bags or portable cornucopia horns with all sorts of soil-sprouted goods, including heirloom tomatoes, sweet peas, and fresh asparagus. The farm also teams up with fellow Yolo County and Pacific Northwest farms to deliver boxes of seasonal produce to area homes.
At Woodland Sewing and Vacuum Center, you can get a sewing machine to create DIY projects and a vacuum to clean up the scraps. The shop, which has been in business for more than four decades, sells high-quality machines, including Miele vacuums and Janome sewing machines. It also provides crafters with sewing classes that teach how to make everything from baby dresses to quilts. Once machines start to age or become sentient, patrons can bring them back to the shop for necessary repairs.
Laline's shelves overflow with aromatic bath and body products made with natural ingredients including salts from the Dead Sea and essential oils from Provence. After getting wrapped in vintage-style packaging, the far-flung ingredients make their way to 60 locations worldwide—with only three in the United States. Creams, lotions, and soaps for women help maintain soft skin, and products for babies blend gentle elements such as chamomile oil, aloe vera, and stork tears. Laline also doles out feminine, bright-pink products for girls, as well as shaving supplements and soaps for men.
White walls and furnishings give the shop's shabby-chic interior a clean, airy vibe. Laline's colorful products pop against white tables and shelves, which nestle beneath delicate crystal chandeliers.
