In Normandy Oaks Golf Course, the city of Royal Oak operates a course open to the public. Aside from scenic views and lush, emerald fairways, the course offers players nine chances to hit long-distance drives and slam-dunk their ball into the hole. It also has a pro shop and a teaching professional ready to iron out rickety swings.
SwingTEK Golf Academy invites golfers to hone their skills year-round. Inside the 6,800-square-foot facility, visitors can practice their swings at five hitting bays; chip their way out of a sand bunker; and improve their short game on a 900-square-foot putting green. They can also have their swings analyzed by the academy's advanced software, including a wireless biomechanical vest. Outfitted with sensors, this vest measures rotation, pitch, and tilt of a player's body and swing movements, spitting out results in seconds to make tracking progress easy. After perfecting their approach, golfers can show off their skills during rounds on the facility's high-def simulator, which is pre-loaded with more than 15 of the world's most renowned courses.
Nine flagsticks are strategically placed across 2,274 yards of fairways and greens lined by sand traps and water hazards, beckoning golfers to seek them out in a competitive spirit. The executive layout of Hampton Golf Club features six par 4s and three par 3s for a par-33 track that presents diverse challenges. Interconnected ponds and streams figure prominently on six holes, including the 316-yard fourth hole, which plays toward a green that has concealed itself behind the edge of a pond in a never-ending attempt to win a game of hide-and-seek with a local soccer field. Before rounds, guests can stock their bags with cold drinks, snacks, and course necessities such as tees, balls, and dueling gloves at the course pro shop. In 1917, famed golf-course architect Donald Ross carved New Rogell Golf Course out of an urban plot along Grand River Avenue, adding yet another gem to a portfolio of courses that also includes Pinehurst No. 2 and Oakland Hills. Today, players enjoy the fruits of Mr. Ross’s labor as they cruise over a bentgrass path that stretches to 6,075 yards from the farthest tees. Two additional tee boxes start off each hole as well, allowing golfers to tailor rounds to their skill level or forsake tees completely and start in a bunker.

Palmer Park Golf Course may be a short, flat layout designed for beginners?but that doesn't mean it hasn't attracted its fair share of heavyweights. Since it was founded in 1927, boxer Joe Louis, singer Marvin Gaye, and members of The Temptations and Four Tops have all played the course. Though each of them gained fame in their respective fields, they all looked to Palmer Park as a place suitable for their more modest skills as golfers and budding interests in amateur turf management. In additional to traditional rounds, Palmer Park also features footgolf on the front nine, where players navigate the fairways by kicking soccer balls toward soccer ball-sized holes.
