The name encompasses not only the mission, but the scope as well. Kids Matter International works to show children that they are important even if they live in poverty—even if they were abandoned or orphaned—setting their sights as close to home as Northern Texas and as far away as India and Honduras. In Texas, its work is apparent in children heading to school with new clothing and supplies. In India, an orphanage gives children a home through political unrest and natural disaster. And in Honduras, the organization provides transitional housing for young girls who have faced abuse.

Yet the people behind Kids Matter International know that when facing a foe as intractable as childhood poverty, no one can solve the problem alone. That’s why the organization—which comprises just four full-time staff members—teams up with hundreds of volunteers and dozens of corporate partners to put on programs that directly benefit disadvantaged children.

Ohlook Performing Arts Center came on the scene in 2002 and had 4 students in our first class (2 of those being family!) Founded by professional singers, Matthew Lord and Jill Blalock Lord, they continued forward and word quickly grew about this little theatre in this tiny space where kids could come and be themselves.

Through its national vision-screening program, See by Three, the Children's Eye Foundation trains medical professionals, screens young children for vision impairment, and raises public awareness on vision problems. The organization will provide screenings for 80 children ages 3–5 to detect and treat disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus that can lead to vision loss if left untreated. The foundation has screened 10,000 young children since its inception, improving the quality of screenings along the way and providing them at an early age to prevent unnecessary vision loss.

At Arts Council Northeast's Summer Arts College, kids ages 6–15 embrace their inner artisans during classes on the visual arts, set design, and performance. Students arrive at Crown of Life Lutheran School each morning for five full-day (9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.) aesthetics-building sessions. In From Trash to Treasure, students repurpose useless items into a green masterpiece, as discarded movie stubs, plastics, and Cable Ace Awards find new life on the canvas. Drawing on the sketches and ideas of the children, mosaic classes combine their previous works into a wondrously motley mélange. Drama classes unlock the excitement of staging live theater, as kids explore acting through improvisation, monologues, and short scenes while learning the finer details of songwriting and playwriting. Between blocking movements and testing newly built trapdoors, drama-loving kids craft sets before performing a play they've written for friends and family on the last day of camp.
