A brushed metal sign atop a cabinet of top industry products sets the stage for the experience at Pacific Sun Tanning Company—a contemporary tanning salon rated No. 1 by the readers of Reno News & Reviews for the last five years. The salon's UV specialists undertake Smart Tan's comprehensive certification before bending the sun's radiation to their will, learning the ins and outs of ray exposure, selecting ideal skincare products, and discerning which compliments will coax Helios into sharing his private stash of solar beams. They can also eschew the sun entirely and bestow beachy glows through custom spray-tan services. The popular tanning facilities and the staff's enthusiastic demeanor have expanded into six locations throughout the Reno and Sparks.

An Aveda concept salon, Shine staffs expert aestheticians who woo customers with a comprehensive menu of beautifying and calming services. Haircuts ($35 for women, $20 for men) feature complimentary head, neck, and scalp massages to calm scissor-fearing tendrils, while non-scalp follicles can be sentenced to waxing, from simple lip pruning ($10 and up) to a full Brazilian deforestation ($65 and up). A manicure ($20) and pedicure ($35–$65) can restore shoddy digit tips to their original state of glamour. Pre-prettified figures can revel in a 30-, 60-, or 90-minute signature relaxation massage ($35–$85) from the licensed therapist, which features an effleurage barrage designed to ward off tax nightmares and melt away tensions. This Groupon can also be used toward products or pricier services such as the aromatherapy hot-stone massage ($80 for 60 min., $110 for 90 min.), which blots out agitation with essential-oil scents and sizzling basalt rocks.

In 2012, Salon 2000 helped 38 people donate 469 inches of hair to help create wigs for children suffering from medical hair loss. As part of the Spread the Love campaign organized by Matrix, the salon provides fundraising and charitable opportunities for Locks of Love and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Salon 2000 also offers a 20% discount on all new products to clients who bring in gently used products. The salon donates these products to Casa de Vida, a nonprofit organization that provides housing for pregnant women aged 12–22 who are experiencing homelessness.

When owner Rhonda Clark and her team of stylists, manicurists, and an aesthetician aren’t helping make the world a better place, they are helping clients feel better about their appearances. They cut off split ends and add rich hues to strands. They shape nails and tend to cuticles and remove unwanted hair with waxing. They also treat skin problems with targeted microzone treatments.

True experts have signed off on Goddess Repair Shop's beauty treatments—their M'lis Body Contour Wrap, for instance, was created by a biochemist at UCLA Medical Center. The spa's owner picked it based on two decades of experience in the health and beauty industry, and her savvy has paid off. The wrap aims to slim areas of the body by boosting circulation and lymphatic flow, flushing out the toxins and waste that can build up in fat cells. Another of the spa's signature treatments, microcurrent sessions hone tiny electrical impulses to tone and tighten tissue on the face and body, making guests look more youthful without the public humiliation of wearing a beanie cap.

With dozens of locations sprinkled around the sunshine state, California Sun makes it easy for tanners to bronze without fear of sunburn. As sunless bathers daydream within two levels of Ergoline beds, melanin rises to the skin's surface at the beck and call of a high-pressure cooling system or adjustable face tanners, leaving bodies with a golden glow in just 10–12 minutes. For those who prefer the misty kiss of a sunless spray tan, formulas by VersaSpa, Mystic Tan, or Norvell grace guests with new shades that can last from four to seven days and won't leave skin looking unnaturally orange or supernaturally blue.
