Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing with the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn up to 500 calories with each go-round.

Q&A with Katie Wood, Owner Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? Pure Barre is a results-driven workout with clients seeing changes in their bodies in as few as 10 classes. Our team of highly trained and experienced teachers is dedicated to creating a warm and welcoming community of like-minded women who look forward to coming to class, not only for the fantastic workout, but to relieve stress, see their friends, and give themselves a little well-deserved "me-time." The physical and emotional benefits experienced at Pure Barre are what set us apart from other fitness techniques and keep clients coming back. What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make? We had a client lose 16 inches in just one month. She noticeably melted away her hips, thighs, arms, and waist, and mentioned she was sleeping better and felt more energized during the day. She attended class 4?5 times a week and saw definition in her muscles she never thought possible. Her transformation was truly remarkable and inspiring, but the pride it gave her was priceless. What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student? For 55 minutes, your personal life will melt away as you plunge into this fun workout set to motivating music. Your teacher will set up the exercises and then circulate the room, correcting form to help you get the most out of your time in class. Jump right in with a high-energy warmup, followed by light weight work to sculpt and strengthen the arms. We transition to the ballet barre to tone the thighs and lift and shape the seat with small, precise movements. Targeted exercises define and flatten the abs, and we cool down with deep stretching to elongate the muscles. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? The Pure Barre technique has more than 12 years of science and research behind it and is constantly being refined and developed. Our teachers have been and continue to be trained and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure our clients get the very best workout possible. We believe that everyone is capable of rocking our classes?no dance experience required. As long as you can hold a ballet barre, you can do Pure Barre. That?s not to say that it?s easy, your first class will likely feel challenging at times, but we encourage you to stick with it. Try your hardest and let loose, and feel free to ask your instructor plenty of questions after class if you weren't clear on any of the moves. At Pure Barre, we believe that exercise should be fun.

Jan Long and Barb Oviatt, owners of The Mat in Liberty Lake, bring their own fitness specialties to the gym, which has won or been a finalist in the Spokane CityVoter Best of Spokane awards every year since 2012. Long specializes in Baptiste-style power yoga, an intensive practice that builds strength and flexibility. She offers modifications on her exercises, of course, and teaches plenty of classes that focus on gentle, restorative postures. Oviatt, on the other hand, brings 30 years of experience in taekwondo to the table, so it's no surprise that she teaches classes in kickboxing. She also focuses on health and nutrition, advising clients to only eat foods they can lift without any help.

It's impossible to stand still at Jazzercise Fitness Centers of Spokane, where bumping music and trendy dance moves keep butts shaking and hearts pounding. The class schedule is dominated by Dance Mixx, which combines dance-based cardio and strength training into one calorie-torching session. The enthusiastic instructors also lead a smattering of more specialized classes, including Core, which focuses on the abs, and Strike, which unites cardio with kicks and jabs. To keep groups motivated, each class is soundtracked with top 40 hits and absolutely no funeral dirges.
