Before Zombie Buffet 5K, the zombie apocalypse was simply a tall tale played out in movies and among survival enthusiasts. Now, the deliciously horrific fantasy has been realized in the form of a fun and challenging 5K. First, runners must choose a side—either traverse the course as a runner, or move about the infected habitat as a sprinting or roaming zombie.

Each runner gets two health flags, which zombies try their undead best to steal. When runners lose both flags, they become zombies and must then hunt down their fellows in search of other flags. The zombie with the most flags in each starting wave wins and goes home with the happy knowledge that they are the fittest of the unfit. The top three runners in each wave who finish with at least one health flag still intact will win the running division.

Regardless of their alignment, all participants get swag such as a Zombie Buffet 5K T-shirt, a silicone bracelet, and dog tags, but the running winners and zombie winners are bestowed additional secret grand prizes.

Though Shining Light Gymnastics offers more than just its namesake sport, gymnastics is this gym's bread and butter. An impressive staff has lead students into state, regional, and national champions in gymnastics, power tumbling, and rhythmic gymnastics. Demonstrating that it's never too early to get kids into fitness, the gym offers a special parent-and-child class that sees 12- to 36-month old tots spinning on bars and jumping around with the help of their parents. Kids as young as 2 take the mat themselves while learning the basics of tumbling and walking on the balance beams. As students progress through class levels, their routines become more difficult and their uniforms sprout more sequins. In addition to classes, the gym hosts birthday parties and activity-filled summer camps.

Replete with ornate gardens and a brick mansion fronted by towering, white columns, Rippavilla Plantation winds the clock back to the time of the Civil War. In the fall, the smells of bonfires and steaming hot chocolate fill the sprawling grounds as they host pumpkin paintings and other old-timey, outdoor fun. The Rippavilla corn maze tests internal compasses and scarecrow-bribing techniques on a 10-acre, labyrinthine path. As they pass through the maze, guests encounter signs that boast historical facts about major Civil War battles in 1862, putting them in touch with the site's legacy. For a plus-size serving of fresh, autumn air, guests can also board the hayride to circle the grounds, which are devoid of the sinister ghouls that often emerge at many fall festivals; instead, the grounds remain family-friendly throughout the night.
