Upon Lion Heart Fencing Academy's floated wooden floors, fencers of all experience levels from age 7 to adulthood cross blades under the guidance of British Academy of Fencing–certified maestro Stuart Lee and his staff. Their curricula teach the sport's physical aspects, including agility, strength, and tactical thinking, while emphasizing the ideals of sportsmanship, respect, and self-control, discouraging students from humiliating their opponents with pointed dis raps. The center arms fencers with the necessary equipment and peddles weapons, uniforms, and protective gear from Alliance Fencing for those who wish to purchase their own.
Larisse Robinson, a passionate paint-slinger since childhood, shepherds developing daubers ages 5 and older in intimate art classes capped at six to eight students. In each pastel class, pullulating painters of all skill levels will learn the ins and outs of bedecking paper with pastels (supplies included) to create prismatic renditions of animals or posed cornucopias worthy of world-class fridge galleries.
Chances are Laurence Olivier never studied at a place like Active Shooter Defense School, though he would have fit right in. The outdoor firearms academy often works with actors, training them to shoot correctly so they can mimic those techniques on stage and screen. But a role on the latest crime show is hardly a requirement. Instructors?all of whom are combat veterans?also teach public classes in pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Their outdoor range also hosts a monthly shooting competition.
Sponsored by the San Diego Army Advisory Council, the Community Salute to Heroes 5K Crossfit Race celebrates and benefits American do-gooders including first responders and military families. The race begins at Grossmont High School, with heats taking off from the starting line at 15-minute intervals. As runners navigate the 5K course, Army representatives will greet them at the end of each kilometer with optional CrossFit exercises. Because the CrossFit stations are optional and most people can’t read military time, runners will not be timed.
As the runners make their way toward the finish line, the festivities continue around them. The mayor of El Cajon will oversee proceedings as the master of ceremonies, and a two-star general will be on hand to swear in more than 100 future soldiers. Spectators can take in musical performances by the Heroes throughout the day, or send little ones to the Kiddy Corner for bounce-house sessions and other activities.
Apus Air's instructors love sharing the joy of flight with anyone willing to learn, especially international students. They offer everything from casual discovery flights to commercial pilot certification and the training of private pilots in multiple languages. They teach their commercial pilot course apace, usually completing the program in about six months with weekend sessions available, and they teach all of their lessons in one-on-one settings at the student's pace. This allows instructors to make sure students have a firm grasp of equipment and procedures, maximize time spent in the air, and get used to seeing birds up close.
