Long before she founded The Pilates Connexion, Jeanna Vanni fell in love with Pilates through her practice as a strength and conditioning specialist. The women who would one day compose her staff, meanwhile, developed a passion for the fitness medium through dance and injury rehabilitation. Their different experiences speak not only to the wide-ranging applications of Pilates, but also to the eclectic backgrounds that feed into their teaching styles in the studio.
At The Pilates Connexion, they work with clients to personalize each program,, building core strength and long, lean muscles. This occurs in group Pilates mat classes, where students use their own body weight as resistance, or sessions on the reformer and low chair, where they work against the power of springs. Private classes use Pilates to help with injury rehabilitation, pre- and post-natal fitness, athletic conditioning, and any number of other goals.
While studying under renowned Ashtanga masters, Mark Nelson, owner of The Yoga Garden, learned that each person receives unique benefits from their yoga practice—be it the calmness felt postclass or the increased physical strength gained from core-centric poses. His roster of instructors, a diversely trained group, teaches with this knowledge in mind. The guiding yogis include a prenatal yoga master, a former philosophy student and martial artist, and a published author who pens poetry when she is not positioned in downward facing dog. The faculty also offers lessons in Pilates and meditation, allowing clients to choose from multiple, mat-paved routes to inner peace.
Lithe 101 gives fit and injury-free newbies a gateway into the Lithe Method that doesn't require them to answer cryptic riddles. Developed by Lauren Boggi after a rotator cuff injury caused by repeated meteorite strikes ended her college cheerleading career, the Lithe Method is an innovative, multitasking exercise system informed by her extensive Pilates studies in New York, as well as her own rah-rahing background. Bored by the rigid Pilates system, Lauren created her own method for effectively stretching and lengthening muscles that incorporates music and dance. Each session includes her trademarked elements, Cardio-Cheer-Sculpting and the Higher-Power-Band-System, as well as ballet-blasting barre work, strength training with weights and small equipment, and deep stretches. In a single hour, students will receive a cardio-powered full-body blast that sculpts long, lean muscles onto arms, abs, thighs, calves, torsos, glutes, and earlobes.
Gyms provide people with all of the equipment and guidance that they need to pursue their individual fitness goals. AFC Fitness is more than a gym though. Instead, the centers provide their members with a comprehensive range of services intended to help people not only get in better shape, but also begin living healthier lifestyles in general. This broad approach is apparent throughout the centers' massive selection of group fitness classes, which includes everything from aerial yoga and Pilates to CrossFit workouts and high-intensity water aerobics.
Personal trainers are also on hand to lend their expertise and coaches offer sports-specific training that covers the fundamentals of baseball or tennis. However, the focus isn't limited to guided workouts and fitness classes. AFC Fitness's physical therapists can help people gradually recover from the mobility-limiting effects of injury or surgery and the registered dietitians provide customized consultations that explain the nutritional value of fresh produce compared to plastic fruit.
Traditional Hatha yoga is the focus at The School of Royal Yoga Inc, but despite the classic approach, the staff there strive to make the practice accessible to non-traditional audiences. Here, the broad range of yoga classes caters not only to newcomers and experts, but to seniors, teens, and children. Extra gentle yoga classes are available for those recovering from special needs or those who haven't exercised in some time, while mother and baby yoga classes provide a unique bonding experience for parents and children and are open to babies as young as six weeks. This dedication to spreading the joys of yoga also manifests itself in The School of Royal Yoga's nine-month yoga-instructor certification course, which readies participants to lead their own classes.
