A Golden Griffin emblem presides over Canisius College Athletics’ 17 sports teams, which traverse grass, water, and hard court in search of victory. As part of the NCAA Division I’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Canisius’s athletes face off against other East Coast schools including Marist College, Niagara University, and Loyola University Maryland. From the stands, a sea of blue and gold cheers on the men’s basketball, hockey, and lacrosse teams, the women’s soccer, softball, and volleyball teams, and the adjunct professors’ annual soapbox derby.
Healthy Buffalo has one primary objective: transform Buffalo's citizens into models of health and well-being. But instead of urging everyone in the community to spend their lunch break bench-pressing a coworker, the organization has ironed out a handful of initiatives to make its goal a reality. For instance, it organizes amateur sports leagues?including dodge ball and basketball?complete with stats, jerseys, and trophies to encourage healthy competition. And it hosts youth basketball clinics for boys and girls.
Away from the fields of play, however, Healthy Buffalo stays connected to the community by maintaining a website packed with free nutritional guidance, exercise tips, and mental health information. It also works with employers to create health and wellness programs for employees to help combat rising health costs.
Some of the drills practiced at Dream Large Basketball are what most fans would classify as fouls. There’s the one where players crash into padded mats while trying to maintain their dribble. If that isn’t difficult enough, there’s another drill that demands players to dribble two balls simultaneously while being pushed from the front and pulled from behind. Coach Phil Ramirez, the man behind these challenging drills, believes that young ballers will excel during games if they’re physically tested during practice. That means a mix of basketball training and fatiguing exercises, which include cone drills, wall sits, heavy rope routines, and memorizing Dr. James Naismith’s thesis paper. Through hard work and plenty of sweat, the training facility hopes to get youth ballers closer to earning a spot on their middle school, high school, or college teams.
Inside Sky Zone, wall-to-wall floor trampolines, angled wall trampolines, and a wide blue foam pit enable visitors to excise energy by literally bouncing off the walls. Instructors lead participants through low-impact aerobics, core-strength exercises, and aerial calisthenics in SkyRobics, and supervise trampoline-propelled dodge-ball games during 3-D Dodgeball. They also lead one-week youth camps that combine their classes with supervised open-jump sessions. They conduct all activities indoors to ensure supervised safety and that passing storks don't take back their deliveries. Showcasing a commitment to health as well as entertainment, Sky Zone partners with the American Heart Association and its fitness programs.
At Regency Fitness, a staff of amicable trainers introduces new members to their 17,000-square-foot facility, stocked with TV-mounted Precor cardio machines, weight equipment, and free weights. In group fitness classes, they also help members stretch into Hatha yoga poses, amp up cardio workouts with Zumba's Latin-inspired dance-party moves, and pummel punching bags during Box Fit sessions. After workouts, steam rooms stand by to melt sore muscles and snowmen with poor judgment.
It?s not the 25 metre-indoor pool, the racquetball courts, the shiny basketball courts, or even the 20-foot waterslide towering over the beach-entry family pool that first catch guests? eyes at Regency Family Fitness, it?s the reception desk. Forged from cherry wood and stainless steel, the desk embodies the centre?s ethos: the experience is in the details. A staff of 60 meticulously maintains the 50,000-square-foot facility, which houses more than 100 cardio machines, an aerobics studio, yoga studio, and Boxing For Fitness studio, the last of which encompasses a pro-sized ring, heavy bags, and speed bags. The staff has also developed a 40-minute strength-training circuit that tones muscles with 26 machines, rather than leaving exercisers to design their own workouts and contour in six-packs with professional-grade makeup.
Delving deeper into the details, members can take full advantage of a variety of amenities. After workouts, recently sweaty people can head to the juice bar caf?, lounge in steam rooms, or pick up their progeny from the daycare centre. Regency Family Fitness also has a Play Zone designed for kids 8?17 years old that is equipped with dance pads, a youth exercise circuit, and Sony game bikes.
