It was summer, a time when most teens spend their days sleeping late and playing video games. But not Chris Maxwell. He was 16 and wanted to get a jump-start on the next year’s wrestling season. So he hit the gym, and it changed his life—as of that summer, he knew his future career would be centered around fitness.
Now a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist, Chris helps people mold their physiques and lives into healthier states with private and small-group training sessions. Additionally, his 16-week packages include body-composition testing, custom meal plans, and a secret handshake to start each training session.
The origin of Team Appleby Fitness is a tale of two Applebys. Steve Appleby grew up in Southern California, and led a very active lifestyle until the age of 17, when he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. Determined, Steve rehabilitated and transformed himself, eventually making a career out of helping others do the same.
Tanya Appleby, meanwhile, hails from Northern California. For awhile, she led an inactive, unhealthy lifestyle. Then she met Steve in 2000. Inspired by his story, she, too, underwent a transformation, eventually dedicating herself to helping others just as Steve had years before. Today, Steve and Tanya both boast multiple certifications, including personal training. They combine their decades of experience to offer a variety of training programs, assisting clients in weight loss, muscle training, endurance training, and more.
First-time campers kick off with a comprehensive, one-on-one consultation with a certified fitness consultant. Then, during each session, boot-bodies can expect varied total-body workouts heightened by exercise formats such as resistance training, jump roping, kickboxing, Pilates, partner drills, short-distance running, and encyclopedia ripping-in-half. At the end of four weeks, goals are assessed and firm, silent, head nods of confidence are exchanged. Long Beach Boot Camp requires that all campers bring the following equipment to each session: exercise mat, set of hand weights, resistance band, and water bottle.
At Evolved Strength, patrons can take many different paths toward personal fitness. Traditional exercise machinery—strength-training machines, free weights, ellipticals, treadmills, stationary bikes—shares floor space with boot-camp, spin, and yoga studios, where group classes take place. Evolved Strength also houses three racquetball courts, and, outdoors, patrons can swim laps in a heated pool. As for the gym’s staff of personal trainers, they customize workouts so that exercisers perform a more effective routine and achieve their fitness goals faster.
G60fit builds a bridge between two worlds: the gym and the ocean. Their Surfset classes tone muscles with all the tools of a pro surfer, except for the waves. Students stand atop a teetering board to perform swimming motions, stretches, and bodyweight exercises, strengthening their core as they try to stay balanced and simultaneously flirt with an invisible lifeguard. There are also Surfset lessons for kids, which act as a virtual surf outing and an entertaining workout.
Aside from Surfset, G60fit offers 35-minute boot-camp classes. These center on a rotating theme, from kettlebells to kickboxing, and meet at a variety of times throughout the day to accommodate busy schedules. Though certified personal trainers and nutritionists are also on staff to develop individualized programs, the sense of community found in these classes is one of the gym's strongest motivational factors. A signature mix of teamwork and playful competition keep guests determined to complete single reps, as well as entire 60-day challenges.
