Inside the infrared-heated studio of Lotus Loft, groups gather seven days a week to bend, stretch, and sweat. It's here that they hone in on the integral mind-body connection that is so unique to the practice of yoga. Though not all the classes are heated, many incorporate warmth to help loosen muscles and increase blood-flow, helping participants to maximize their yoga poses and achieve a highly advanced glow. The studio, which is dedicated to maintaining an environmentally green facility, also plays host to Pilates, Pilates barre, and fitness classes in addition to yoga sessions.
The women inside the FEMforce boxing ring might throw hundreds of punches, but they aren't fighting each other. They're too busy sweating through kickboxing routines side by side, which is the same way they perform push-ups, box jumps, and kettlebell lifts. Their collective determination fuels the female-only boot-camp session, even though they might all be pursuing different goals. Some hope to lose weight, whereas others want to tone their arms, or develop flat, hard abs without having to ingest a hardcover dictionary.
The path to these achievements begins with a private physical assessment. During this time, one of coach Lucas's fitness consultants meets with each camper to determine what particular challenges she'll face and what results she desires. Students then tackle the fitness regimen at their own pace, modifying it as they go if need be.
The certified instructors of Miss Fits Fitness Studio, Inc. are indeed misfits in the gym industry, as they steer clear of exercise machinery. Instead, they rely on dynamic, female-centric workouts to condition muscles and burn calories. Their curriculum covers Mommy and Me, Zumba, yoga, Pilates/boxing, and dance—including choreography from current music videos. And although the studio rejects machines, it employs a variety of specialized equipment. Kangoo jump boots, for example, enable students to leap and bounce during low-impact cardio routines, and dance poles provide the support for sultry moves that also tone the body.
At Samson Strength and Conditioning, a plethora of instructors and trainers leads a variety of fitness and training classes. The weekly schedule includes a large selection of boot-camp sessions, Zumba classes, and athletic training alongside powerlifting training and youth strength training and conditioning. One-hour group training classes emphasize personal attention with small class sizes of up to 20 people, and personal-training sessions are also available.
Master Gym’s training facility houses circuit weight stations, elliptical machines, and other high-quality cardio equipment. Members can work up a sweat following their own routine, or they can join in on one of the regularly scheduled classes. Zumba classes burn calories with fun dance routines set to Latin-inspired music, and cardio-kickboxing sessions help tone muscles using a series of jabs, hooks, and other boxing moves. Master Gym also offers boot-camp sessions, which mix a variety of exercises to build strength and endurance.
At TITLE Boxing Club, heavy 100-pound bags punctuate the open gym space. Led by a professional boxer, kickboxer, or MMA trainer, the classes lead students through full-body fitness using boxing or kickboxing techniques. In addition the small-group classes, the trainers conduct personal-training sessions.
