Some aspiring thespians think acting just comes easily, then discover the terror of stage fright. Other seemingly accomplished actors assume TV and film acting is a cinch, until they freeze up in the light, miss their mark, and lament their lack of proper training. And many just want to get over those first hurdles of confidence before they start dreaming of their name in lights. It's hard to get a turtle, or an Oliver, out of its shell, but Aimee Peters—the head coach of The Actor's Scene—has that gift. In basic courses for beginners and extensive advanced courses for those who eat monologues for breakfast, The Actor's Scene tackles not only the nuts and bolts of performance and camera-readiness, but also the rods and grommets necessary to make industry connections, land a good agent, and tower above the rest. The Actor's Scene has also scored a slew of accolades, including local School of the Year awards and an Outstanding Arts Award from Northwestern Oklahoma State University for owner Nicolle Campbell.
The world of fashion can be intimidating. Aspiring designers need to know how fabrics interact, which colors blend, and why you shouldn't go on all fours even though it's called a catwalk. That's why Fashion Workshops runs after-school camps and summer programs for students ages 7 through 15. Kids can either get a jump start on a creative career or learn useful drawing and sewing skills while having fun.
Two Wheel Adventures owner Chris Carr's love of motorcycles has driven him to adventures including becoming the 2011 AHRMA Middleweight Superbike National Champion, careening into authordom with Street Riding Secrets, and bestowing his knowledge of motorcycle handling on budding enthusiasts with a series of introductory classes. Together with a team of moto-enthusiasts, he leads courses that run the gamut from two-hour introductions to motorcycling or scooter skills to two-day basic riding courses, motorcycle street-savvy sessions, and licensing courses. For certain courses, students can borrow one of the motorcycles from Two Wheel Adventures' stable of 250cc Kawasaki Ninjas, Honda Nighthawks, and Yamaha XTs, rather than scrounging up a borrowed bike or attaching a motor to a unicycle.
The instructors at Masterpiece Mixers Paint & Party Studio supply the canvases, paints, and brushes, requiring visitors to bring only their creativity. At studios located around Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Massachusetts, they lead all-level painting classes that last up to 1.5 to 3 hours and focus on subjects ranging from the natural, such as birds and flowers, to still-life guitars, vases, and wine bottles. In some themed sessions, instructors also teach groups to paint abstract pieces or create their own variations on famous landscape paintings that, unlike the originals, can include dinosaurs. Some sessions follow a special date-night structure. At every location, the staff members encourage visitors to bring their own wine, beer, and snacks if desired.
