Sugar Land Dive Center’s store boasts scuba gear from brands such as Atomic, Oceanic and Sea Life, but their signature product is an intangible: a sense of confidence underwater. The PADI five-star dive center’s courses impart just that. After classroom-based instruction, the center’s open water instructors teach divers to breathe underwater and handle their complex gear by practicing in a pool. The program then culminates in a series of real open water dives, which result in open water certification more useful than its earlier incarnation, certification to open water that’s in an aluminum can.

Sugar Land Dive Center also teaches more specialized courses that can transform open water-certified divers into future rescue divers and PADI instructors. For a fusion of dive practice and vacation, students can also travel the world on international scuba trips, which whisk participants to locales such as Cozumel and Fiji.

The gritty, dirty fun of mud runs has become popular among runners, but the creators of The Slime Run thought they could improve on the formula. So in their races, they replace that mix of water and wet earth with their own custom formula: a green, slick slime that inevitably covers runners as they navigate a 5K course. After conquering each of four slime zones, they're presented with a relatively simple obstacle, but one whose objective is more difficult when you're coated in slime.

Of course, there's more fun to be had than just getting messy. At the finish line, a runner's party with food vendors, a beer garden, and live music awaits race finishers, as do perks: race medals, mugs, and headbands. At the end of the day, the emphasis is as much on safety as it is on fun, which is why each batch of slime is mixed from hypoallergenic, edible materials and not material left over from the set of Ghostbusters II.

The D4L 5K Zombie Mud Run challenges its participants to think the unthinkable: “Could I survive a zombie apocalypse?” Throughout the 5K mud-slicked course, only the savviest runners will maintain their humanity, dodging hordes of the undead and navigating strength- and agility-testing obstacles. Runners start with three flags that represent their life force. Those who can keep at least one flag safe from the zombies’ corpsey clutches remain human, and those who lose them all make the harrowing transformation into a brain-hungry zombie. But the D4L 5K Zombie Mud Run is more than a grueling race; it’s also an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the largest zombie gathering on Earth.

After the race, every participant’s name is entered in a drawing for the grand prize—a trip for two to Las Vegas—and event hosts dole out speed prizes to those with at least one flag remaining. Zombies also compete for a set of undead awards and strut very, very slowly in a zombie beauty pageant.

A conflation of Bombay (the old name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, Bollywood refers to the Mumbai-based film industry, which draws up the tradition of golden-age musicals, using song and dance as a way for characters to express their emotions. The dance style that has emerged from these films blends traditional and folk dance moves with beats and movements inspired by modern R&B and hip-hop. The ladies of Bollywood Shake showcase dance routines step by step, strengthening their student's sense of timing, spacing, and how to twirl without bodychecking their dance partner. Students twist and turn inside an expansive studio with lightly stained hardwood floors and decorated with gentle colors of orange and dark yellow. Instructors also offer Bollywood Workout classes, which use sped-up dance routines to tighten and tone the body.

In one of Infused Performing Arts’ Bollywood routines, a princess is trapped in a box, which her assailants then stab with swords. But when they re-open it, they find she has vanished without a trace. Featured on ABC13 News, this routine is just one example of the studio’s Bollywood style, which blends classic choreography with magical flourishes more impressive than pulling a rabbit out of a rabbit-shaped hat. The married couple that heads the studio—Kiron Kumar and Tina Bose—has worked with South Indian movie stars, but now teaches their choreography to the house dance troupe, as well as students trying to master the style.
