John F. Hogan Jr. was a consistent man. He had been clocking in to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company’s corporate office in Akron each day for more than 25 years, learning the ins and outs of its tires. Then, in 1984, he made a slight change. He decided to move to Virginia, open Hogan & Sons Goodyear, and share his knowledge of Goodyear’s tires there. Since then, his business has grown right along with his family—there are now eight locations and many more Hogans. All of the full-service automotive shops have complimentary shuttles and, of course, Goodyear tires. The full-service auto repair shop is staffed by continually trained ASE-certified technicians, who swap out motor oil, realign wheels, inspect brakes, and teach air-conditioning units how to whistle during maintenance and repair services. They service all makes and models and include a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty on all their work.
TireVan began with two friends: one who wasted hours waiting for a dealership to outfit his car with overpriced tires and another who found a windshield-repair company that traveled to his car. Through conversation and basic arithmetic, an idea was born: simplify the process of buying tires by taking the business onto the road. Today, TireVan's customers place their orders online, choosing from brands such as Bridgestone, Michelin, and BFGoodrich, and schedule their appointments for later. Technicians then seek out the requested tires and arrive at home curbsides or office surface parking lots at the specified time. Using scratch-free mounting equipment and computerized balancing technology, techs swap out a full set of tires in as little as 45 minutes while customers cook dinner or attempt to determine the origin of the flying toasters that have invaded their computer. Additionally, the auto gurus can repair brake systems by replacing the pads and rotors with OEM-equivalent parts. TireVan is not able to enter parking garages or underground parking lots.
Serving Northern Virginia since the 1960s, Embassy Autowash carefully cleans each vehicle that cruises through its wash tunnel. During car wash sessions, the brushless system protects automobiles' sensitive surfaces from microscopic scratches while keeping every hair in place.
Whether tending to a lime-green Lamborghini Murciélago, a sleek Harley Davidson, or a family minivan, the technicians at Metropolitan Auto Detailing begin each scrub down the same way: with a 55-point inspection. Based on their assessment, the techs send their microfiber chamois on search-and-destroy missions that eradicate dirt through basic exterior hand washes or detailed shampoo and clay-bar treatments. They break out the vacuums and machine polishers as drivers take in TV and Wi-Fi in the waiting room, or pack up their gear and sojourn to homes, saving cars the trouble of climbing out of their owners’ bed.
But the crew's cleanliness mission doesn't stop at bumpers and wheel wells; they keep an eye on the local water supply by mainly using biodegradable cleansers and products from Griot's Garage, Meguiar's, and 3M that eschew the silicones and petroleum distillates of other cleaners.
