Food & Drink in Sugarland Run

Select Local Merchants

It was 1978. A college dropout and a failed medical-school applicant had just brought together their combined life savings to rent an old gas station. Their plan was to resurrect the empty station and open their own restaurant. Their specialty: ice cream. So begins the story of legendary entrepreneurs Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, who are better known across the globe as Ben & Jerry. Their small, old-fashioned ice-cream parlor eventually became a Burlington, Vermont favorite, and before long, shops popped up all over the U.S. and in 25 other countries. Their brand easily attracted customers––homemade ice cream churned from wholesome, natural ingredients and blended into creative flavors. Some of their popular scoops include Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, and Coffee Caramel Buzz.

Since infusing their first rich and creamy batches of ice cream with natural chunks of fruit, nuts, candies, and cookies, Ben and Jerry have also operated with a commitment to improve the quality of life locally, nationally, and internationally. They practice sustainable food production and business practices that respect the earth and environment. Ben & Jerry’s cartons are made from FSC-certified paper, which comes from forests that are managed for the protection of wildlife, and waste from Ben & Jerry’s plants generates energy to power farms. The company works tirelessly to reduce its carbon emissions; it strongly encourages customers to eat their ice cream in the darkest dark.

The country of India is comprised of twenty-eight states and seven union territories spread over more than one million square miles. Needless to say, the chefs there have developed more than one style of cooking. The chefs at Punjabi Junction, by comparison, aim to condense the diversity of Indian dishes into a single menu without cheating and using a shrink ray. Every day, they put together a lunch buffet featuring more than 20 different dishes, ranging from tandoori-roasted meats to tropical mango curries. They expand the selection come dinner time, roasting goat to toss it with rice and piling plates with flavorful flatbreads such as garlic naan.

Jerusalem Restaurant captivates diners with flavorful meals of zesty fattoush and jerusalem salad, creamy hummus dips, and tender, marinated fish, beef, and chicken fresh from the fiery grill. The restaurant serves up cuisine from the sunny shores of the Mediterranean—kabob plates, falafel wraps, and lentil soup.

Like the recently discovered statues of Abraham Lincoln in Athens, the menu is a blend of Mediterranean and American cultural touchstones, mixing steak subs, pizzas, and BLTs with Middle Eastern comfort foods of spiced ground beef kafta, flaky spinach pies, and sweet baklava.

Inside Mahalo Cove, a grass-topped tiki hut looms over the bar and canoes hang from the walls. It's a telling preview for the restaurant's bounty of tropical food and laid-back entertainment. Mahi-mahi sandwiches, shrimp po' boys, and Polynesian pork tacos line the menu, and games—pool, shuffleboard, and darts—combine with televised sports on 11-foot widescreen TVs to add even more leisure to this beachy oasis. At later hours, the restaurant also features regular performances by local bands and the occasional cartoon crustacean.

Ultrazone Laser Tag might be familiar to fans of The Real World, whose cast members—fed up with drama—blew off steam by ducking colorful laser beams in the sprawling multilevel arena's fog-filled maze. There's enough space for 45 vest-clad players to face off at one time, and plasma monitors let the next wave watch the game as they eagerly await their turn. The expansive recreation center also hosts sleepover parties that grant exclusive overnight use of the laser-tag facilities, the plasma-screen theater, and the room that's inexplicably full of doorknobs. Outside the arena, an arcade keeps synapses ablaze with video games, air hockey, and golf simulators, supplemented with slices of Papa John's pizza from the cafe.
