Sofia Perez has always had a passion for hairstyling and beauty treatments. Her mentor, accomplished hairstylist Gilbert Febles, taught her how to both design hair and push herself beyond perceived limits. After years of experience in running a high-volume beauty salon, Perez created the first Sofi's Color Lounge in Cranford in 1997. Here, she gathered together a team of former coworkers and skilled professionals, and the venture was successful enough to spin off a second location in Summit in 2008.

Today, Perez's adept staff perform their signature color treatments and diverse hair services using hand-picked, innovative products from makers like Goldwell, KMS California, and GK Hair. Both locations have a sleek, modern feel: the Summit site has metallic blue and silver walls, and the Cranford salon also welcomes guests with a metallic color scheme.

Like their business name implies, the trained and licensed beauticians at A Touch of Elegance create more sophisticated looks with their expert treatments and services. In addition to traditional haircuts and manicures, staffers embellish feminine features with everything from make-up to up-dos and hair extensions. Those with Y chromosomes aren't left out; staffers also pamper men with old-fashioned, four-layer barber shaves. After softening the skin and massaging facial muscles, barbers turn back the clock on five-o'clock shadows with straight razors, keeping faces as fresh and youthful as the day they were baked.

I started my schooling in 2008, and since then, I've earned many certifications in various treatments and skills.

The interior of a business can affect how its customers feel. What kind of decor do you use to help make your clients feel pampered and at ease?

My studio features a cozy room with a comfy heated bed, spa music, and scented candles.

What steps do you take to make your clients feel at ease?

I explain in detail all that will be involved and included in their treatments. Their questions will be addressed before we begin.

The stylists at Hy Gorgeous know that the eyes have it, so they focus exclusively on emphasizing peepers with eyelash extensions. They add fringe lash-by-lash, creating a look that can be subtly fuller or boldly unmistakable. Because the extensions do not wash off like mascara, lashes continue to look great after sleeping, exercising, or manning a dunk tank.
