The freedom and ability to look your best all the time shouldn't stop for sports. Such is the belief of Allison Dorst, founder of Pinks and Greens, who took matters into her own hands after discovering it was nearly impossible to find fashionable golf clothes for women. The clothing retailer carries over 100 brands for golf, tennis, and fitness, all of which marry fashion and function. The for-women-by-women brand specifically caters to active ladies, carrying clothing suited for everything from tennis to Pilates?so women can look good while playing or exercising.

Adding one spice to a dish can create a whole new flavor. Adding a carefully selected melange of spices can create a taste revelation?at least that's how Jackie Mittelhammer and Becky Solheim see it. To give all types of chefs that revelatory power, they opened Savory Spice Shop Westfield, where they sell more than 400 spices and herbs and over 160 original spice blends. Grinding each fresh weekly, the flavor champions combine them in bags and bottles to create such harmonious concoctions as Peruvian chile-lime seasoning and Smoky Hills cheese powder with garlic and marjoram. They also give customers the chance to spice up dishes with exotic sea salts, including black lava salt from Hawaii and Italian black truffle sea salt, as well as sauces, extracts, and specialty sugars.

Woodbridge Pools and Ski specializes in the recreational enjoyment of water in two of its fundamental states: chlorinated and powdery. During the summer months, it keeps pools cool and inviting with installations, filters, chemicals, and accessories. When the weather turns colder and locals trade in their Speedos for the slopes, the company unveils its inventory of employee-tested winter-sports equipment by brands such as Burton, Arbor, Flow, and DC, as well as rentals of Völkl skis and snowboards and professional tune-ups.

At Van Houten Lanes, bowling balls thunder down the waxed stretches of 16 AMF synthetic lanes—and crash through the neat rows of AMF pins waiting at the end. All the while, an AMF automatic scoring system keeps an up-to-the-minute record of each player's successes and struggles. And yet bowling isn't all that this modern alley has to offer—a large-screen TV, pool table, and an internet-connected jukebox render the cocktail lounge comfortable enough to pass for "the new apartment" when parents come to visit. The bowling facility's café fuels play with cheesy calzones and signature Hoboken-style 32-inch pizzas—all of which can be washed down with craft beer from Flying Dog Brewing. Thanks to these ample amenities, including family-friendly touches such as lane bumpers, Van Houten Lanes frequently hosts events ranging from children's parties to fundraisers.

Despite discovering running at different times in their lives and under different circumstances, Runner’s High's cofounders—Rob DeFilippis, Craig Segal, and Jim Segal—share a passion for the sport that they pour into their booming business. Now with three New Jersey locations, the newest in Freehold, Runner’s High stocks its shelves with performance-enhancing equipment and specialty running shoes by brands such as Brooks, ASICS, and Saucony, as well as accessories and apparel. Each fitting begins with a complimentary foot analysis, wherein staffers ascertain the foot's needs, be it additional arch support or a hearty tickle. Such fittings ensure optimal performance and minimize the risk of injury. In addition to providing athletic accouterments, the neighborhood store fosters a community of runners who share a goal of reaching new heights of fitness and leaving local biking clubs in their dust. Those hoping to improve their performance can look into weekly group runs and training programs for 5Ks, half marathons, or full marathons. The store also sponsors a postcollegiate racing team with individuals of all ages and ability levels who wish to compete at a high level.
