The family-oriented United Kung Fu marital-arts studio teaches the ancient practice of Kung Fu to students aged 4 to 94. They offer a variety of programs, from basic training and conditioning to embarking on the long, rewarding path to self mastery. Black-belt candidates will have the chance to master one of a number of Kung Fu forms, plus weapons training, and self-defense work. Every program focuses on the tenets of discipline and respect, and every class is taught by an experienced, patient instructor.
A student of martial arts since 1974, Master Tim Elliott employs the skills he has acquired to help boys and girls build confidence, strength, and discipline. A supportive faculty of black belts and orange girdles call mini kickers to the mats from 9 a.m. to noon for introductory lessons in the Korean martial art of Tae Soo Do. The low student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1 ensures that trainees develop a reverent attitude toward their developing talents along with nuanced instruction in self-defense. Legs brace bodies as feet soar during standing, jumping, and spinning kicks; arms rocket forward in various grabs at undefended wrists and ice-cream cones. The camp concludes with a graduation ceremony and a certificate to celebrate each student's increased flexibility, confidence, and passing resemblance to Jean Claude van Damme.
LA Boxing offers fitness classes in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. The proprietary style of the LA Boxing workout is a mixture of genuine fight training, engaging fitness, and stronger-than-earth gravity. Quasi-boxers and martial artists may burn from 800 to more than 1,000 calories during these total-body routines, which combine external inspiration with jukes, jabs, and kicks. Both men and women are welcome in the ring, where they'll learn new techniques and methods to blissfully break into a sweat in an energetic group setting. Gloves are provided during the one-month trial membership, as are a set of reusable pro-quality hand wraps and complimentary motivational mumbling from Burgess Meredith (all three subject to availability).
The very first ATA Martial Arts opened in 1987, its 25 years of existence encapsulating the training of multiple generations of martial artists. Students trained, grew, had children of their own, and enrolled their kids at the same martial arts school they enjoyed as youths. The program of classes grew and evolved as well, starting with a foundation in taekwondo and growing to incorporate other styles and mixed martial arts training.
