The Bear Creek Golf Complex contains two courses with very different challenges. Stretching across 3,552 yards, the par 59 Cub Course tests experienced players with swales and collection areas but is also a good way to ease beginners into the game. On the par 71 Bear Course, meanwhile, golfers pit their skills against rolling fairways and strategic bunkering.
GolfTEC has three convenient locations in the Phoenix area and one in Tucson, all staffed by experienced golfing professionals and computers who’ve sworn allegiance to the Three Laws of golfing robotics. Motion sensors and high-speed cameras monitor the golfer’s swing and break it down on a high-definition video display. GolfTEC’s PGA specialists point out golfers' flaws and strengths, and coach them on how to permanently improve their game, from tee to green. Sensors chirp with approval when golfers execute a perfect stroke or crack an especially witty golfing joke. Customers will also benefit from a $10 gift certificate to Golfsmith, the golf equipment superstore housing GolfTEC’s Chandler, Scottsdale, and Tucson locations. Each of Golfsmith's four Arizona locations is stocked with cutting-edge equipment and custom-fitted clubs.
At Whirlwind Golf Club, 36 holes appear as emerald gashes on the surrounding arid landscape while the Superstition Mountains and Sierra Estrella paint a craggy buffer between the horizon and the blue skies above. The verdant path is divided into two 18-hole courses—Cattail and Devil's Claw—each measuring more than 7,000 yards from the longest tees. On Cattail, the longer of the two, three large ponds and a stream intersect the course, along with numerous bunkers, canyons, and tumbleweeds unafraid to roll right over putting lines. Devil's Claw, meanwhile, pits players against many of the same elements, including blind tee shots and classic risk-reward gambles over watery doglegs.
The Cattail Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 7,334 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 73.4 from the back tees * Course slope of 132 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole
The Devil's Claw Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 7,029 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 72.6 from the back tees * Course slope of 129 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole
Technically, Lone Tree Golf Club is a misnomer?the course has more than just one tree?but it still reflects the general makeup of the course. The course has a few smatterings of palm trees, relying instead on five ponds, grizzled desert waste areas, and contoured greens to rattle players' confidence as they transition from hole to hole. At one of the ponds, an elaborate waterfall sends sheets of water tumbling down four rocky tiers; on another, a central fountain sends a vertical ribbon of mist into the air to memorialize all golf balls that have perished in its depths.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 71 course * Length of 6,984 yards from the tips * Course rating of 71.2 from the tips * Slope rating of 123 from the tips * Five tee options * Scorecard
Challenging course play tucked in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains characterizes Western Skies Golf Club, earning it the yearly honor of hosting the Gilbert City Championship. Players shepherd their golf balls over the 6,744-yard layout aboard carts equipped with GPS systems, which help them determine exact distances to the greens or how far the flagsticks can be thrown like javelins. Water enters play on five holes, including the 18th, where players must hit over a lake off the tee and avoid a second lake to the right of the green on their approach shot.
A lighted practice facility lets golfers pummel Pinnacle range balls into the night sky at the driving range or shore up short-game finesse at the putting and chipping greens. After a round, practice session, or bout of putter swordplay, players can visit the bar and grill to restore calories lost on the fairways and bunkers while watching 12 HD televisions.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 6,744 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 70.3 from the back tees * Course slope of 125 from the back tees * Three sets of tees per hole * Scorecard
An 18-hole executive layout, Greenfield Lakes Golf Course invites linksfolk of all abilities with a fun, 4,107-yard design that runs alongside glassy waters. With 12 par 3s, four par 4s, and a pair of par 5s, the course requires golfers to unsheathe every wedge, iron, wood, and cricket bat in their bag at some point in the round. Pin-hunting odysseys end with dramatic flair at the par 5 18th hole, a 530-yard behemoth where a double dog-leg fairway and a green buttressed by a right-side pond make golfers finish their round with a perplexing high-risk, high-reward course management decision. Before taking to the tee or after a disappointing round, guests can mosey to the practice range?which includes a lighted driving range and a short game area with a practice bunker?to hone their skills without having to mow their basement?s shag carpet into an indoor course.
