Shopping in Sun Lakes

Select Local Merchants

In 1975, Jay Kogan's parents opened up a store that was literally a hall of frames—just a small store stacked with thousands of frames. At the time, they had no idea that that tiny corridor would expand to 12 locations throughout the greater Phoenix area, all still run by the Kogan family. Today, their shops have more than 4,500 custom frame options along with mats of all colors and textures, as well as seven glazing choices and expert assembly. They can answer framing questions and frame everything from documents and artwork to posters and small 3-D objects such as sports memorabilia and very still grandmothers.

When they custom-produce frames, the family cuts their mats exactly, miters frame corners precisely, and installs flawless glass. Or, since the stores' walls are lined with ready-made frames, customers can walk in and find what they're looking for quickly. Since installing framed art is an art unto itself, they also offer hanging services with an eye for placement and ability to install in difficult spaces.

Rated the top nursery for the last 10 years by AZ Business magazine, Moon Valley Nurseries complements its extensive inventory of plants and trees with services such as delivery, installation, and tips for care. The knowledgeable staff can help customers navigate the green aisles of trees and plants, which encompass such Plant Kingdom constituents as Palm Trees, Flowering Trees, Shrubs, and, during the holiday season, Christmas Trees. They also grow their own inventory so they can maintain direct control over the health and well being of their plants, whether treating them with the correct combination of fertilizers or pressuring admittance boards to make sure each seed gets into the best of nursery schools.

The six teachers at Cutting Edge Quilts combine their individual quilting savvy to lead students through a wide range of classes. Amid myriad fabrics and ample creative space, the studio's long-arm quilting machine lets students sew their quilt top, batting, and backing together in a more-time-efficient manner than by using traditional machines or bribing a silkworm. Various quilting groups meet regularly, focusing on different techniques such as hand-sewing and scraps as they take advantage of the studio's gargantuan collection of threads, kits, and specialty fabrics such as Batik and Moda.

Luminous chandeliers float like paper lanterns above the lobby of Chandler Center for the Arts, welcoming guests entering through the towering glass facade. Inside, they find three halls—one larger auditorium, and two more intimate performance spaces—hosting a variety of musical and theatrical performances. Each theater is designed for optimal acoustics, ensuring audiences can hear every tuneful note, stage-whispered line, and breaking of the fourth wall. And the center showcases non-performing arts as well—the Exhibition Hall displays regularly rotating collections of sculptures and paintings.

Q&A with Aladdin, Owner

Sometimes it's all about the little things in life. What supplemental courtesies do you include with your main services to leave clients with a smile on their face?

We press and bag all items before they are ready to pick up. For customers who purchase custom clothing or multiple items in one transaction, we usually offer some additional perk, such as free tailoring or a free tie, belt, or shirt. It all depends on the situation and end cost. During fittings, our master tailors always have recommendations on better suit sizes, cuts, and colors that would benefit the customer. Lastly, for those that have extended wait times during a rush, we always offer complimentary bottle water.

What's one tip for first-time customers that will make them feel like regulars?

Be prepared to try on items in order to be properly fitted by a tailor. If you are looking for a pant or long skirt hem, it is advisable to bring the shoes you intend on wearing with the item so we can determine the best length.

With the belief that the word consignment didn’t need to conjure images of dark and dingy stores stocked with stale fashions, sisters Ann and Jenny Siner opened the doors of their first upscale consignment boutique in 1991. An enthusiastic response led the sisters to expand with more locations and into different resale sectors, opening their first men’s-only store, Well Suited, in 2001.

After more than two decades in the business, the fashion-savvy sisters maintain their commitment to high-end, boutique-style consignment, earning them high praise from discerning shoppers, major press outlets such as Today, and long-pining hangers that finally get to slip on a worthy frock. Each store houses a constantly updated selection of designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, and Nanette Lepore, priced anywhere from 65%–95% below retail. My Sister’s Closet’s store locations dot many of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Arizona, as well as California.
