The two-woman team of Michel Herstam and Heather Allen started HALO (Helping Animals Live On) Animal Rescue out of their homes in 1994 to provide temporary shelter for abandoned cats and dogs until they were adopted. Today, out of the basement and into its own adoption center, HALO’s mission is twofold: it aims to rescue animals at risk of being euthanized in shelters and works to create a better welfare system for the 100,000 cats and dogs that enter Maricopa County shelters every year. Each animal in the organization’s care receives a complete medical examination and treatments, and no animal is euthanized for being unable to find a home. Online bios highlight animals for potential adopters, focusing on how each animal will fit into an individual's home, family, and lifestyle in order to foster a lifelong match. In 2011, HALO placed more than 3,520 cats and dogs in loving homes.

For all their ubiquity, chain restaurants seldom embody the same character and culture as their independently owned counterparts. That’s where Arizona Food Tours comes in. With their signature A Taste of Old Town Scottsdale tour, the company introduces visitors to the idiosyncrasies and food of the desert burg, from classic western grub to the local wine bars that pour cabernet and red zinfandel for diners and thirsty cacti.

The skilled doctors and veterinary nurses at 43rd Ave., an AAHA-accredited facility, tune up cuddly quadrupeds with tender care. Comprehensive nose-to-tail physical exams are conducted by a vet-and-nurse team, who begin each checkup with a weigh-in, temperature-taking, and pulse check, followed by an examination of the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose to identify symptoms of infection, injury, or abnormalities such as restless-tail syndrome. After a skin and coat survey, the abdomen and extremities are gently inspected with a listening to the heart and lungs to ensure the absence of latent injuries or budding thumbs.

Boasting a 100% cage-free environment and over 8,000 total sq. feet, Gilbert Dogs 24/7 & Chandler Dogs 24/7 keep pups active as they romp around in open playrooms supervised by well-trained staff on grounds open 24 hours a day. The boarding facility screens every dog during a behavioral evaluation conducted prior to admission. All pooches that pass are free to run around the daycare gnawing on toys, crafting canine art, and acquiring best friends who don’t ever demand that they fetch newspapers or platters bearing three-course meals. Supervising staff members are certified dog lovers and have completed an Interpreting Dog Body Language seminar to help diffuse potential conflicts in the playroom, and film videos of pups having fun to show to returning owners. For clients leaving their pups for an extended period, the facility’s overnight boarding service allows owners to rest easy knowing that an overnight staff member is always on hand to comfort canines after nightmares of losing at poker. The shop rounds out its canine-comforting service menu with shuttle rides to appointments or puppy field trips, courses in obedience training, and spa grooming sessions in which pups are washed, dried, and brushed until coats gleam with a healthy shine.
