Marlene La Fleur’s equine epiphany struck in 1963, when an American Saddlebred steed named Mr. Sandman motivated her to open a stable and breed her own army of championship horses. Since then, Marlene and her husband’s stable has grown by leaps and bounds, with the rein-tuggers moving into an ultramodern barn and training facility in 2001 that allowed them to expand their English-style riding lessons. Placing an emphasis on horsemanship and equitation, Marlene’s daughter Neva leads hands-on lessons that cycle through proper grooming, tacking, and riding techniques catered to each student’s individual skill set. Pintsized riders may also celebrate birthdays or visits from John Wayne’s ghost during group parties replete with barn tours, breezy trots, and a party room that boasts a full kitchen. The stable’s stylish and well-mannered steeds kick up their hooves in spacious 144-square-foot stalls, which are built from southern yellow pine and equipped with individual windows overlooking the grounds’ picturesque rolling hills.

Founded in 2007 by certified master dog trainer Jaime Van Wye, Zoom Room fosters relationships between dogs and their owners through obedience and agility classes. Obstacles such as hurdles, hoops, and ramps populate the interactive indoor facility, helping energetic pups burn off steam, gain focus, and get in shape for roles summer stock productions of Homeward Bound. In addition to basic obedience courses, specialty classes for shy or overly rambunctious dogs build confidence through positive reinforcement and a controlled class environment. Dogs seeking less structured outings often romp through half-hour blocks of private gym time, working through the agility course at their own pace.

Angie Schuldies and Nate Mathis have always loved having pet dogs and cats. Eventually, they extended their care and attention to animals outside their homes by working with rescue groups and fostering dogs. This consistent volunteerism fueled their vision of one day owning a doggy daycare—a dream realized by The Dog Haus. During daytime sessions, pups romp together in an indoor play area supervised by animal-loving caretakers. Besides overseeing the fun, the staff trains furry companions, working to refine their manners and social skills, such as mastering a firm pawshake while maintaining eye contact.

For dogs needing overnight accommodation, the boarding program available at their 410 Atlas Avenue location welcomes them to socialize and exercise during the day and snooze in a private kennel at night. Larger kennels can accommodate family packs. Additional services include petsitting, transportation, and grooming.
