At CrossFit Miami, it's not rare to hear encouragements and instructions shouted English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Founded by Sao Paulo native Marcio Pizanelli, the gym and adjoining capoeira school boast an international staff of certified instructors hailing from Brazil, Venezuela, and the United States. Marcio and his team promote hard work and competition during each energizing workout, which might include weight balls, rowing machines, pull-up bars, or any other piece of the gym's extensive arsenal. Basic classes emphasize proper form for CrossFit's central lifts, and daily workouts keep muscles guessing with a variable blend of conditioning, strength training, core workouts, and getting chased by a terrier with gross, muddy paws.
Recognizing the interdependence of fitness and martial arts, Thump Fight Gym & Fitness Center married the two, inspiring patrons of all ability levels to hone their combat skills while making strides toward an overall healthier lifestyle. The trainers and certified exercise physiologists lead martial-arts classes including boxing, muay thai, and jujitsu, challenging fighters to face off in the regulation-size boxing ring or the half cage—which has proven inadequate for housing feral exercise bikes. During each class, students burn calories and learn practical and potentially lifesaving self-defense skills. To supplement the combat training, the instructors also lead yoga and Pilates classes, spinning, kettlebell training, and CrossFit classes. The gym also accommodates solo workout routines with a weight-training zone and functional fitness equipment such as oversize tires and climbing ropes.
Developed by a former gymnast, CrossFit focuses on exercises that benefit anyone, ranging from gymnastic movements to full-body exercises such as kettlebell swings and Olympic lifts. At affiliate gym CrossFit Kingdom, Head Coach Vidal Lazo can testify to the results. As a firefighter, paramedic, and SWAT medic, Vidal had to be ready to reach those in need no matter what. That meant being in good enough shape to pull himself through a window, carry a person down flights of stairs, or open a fire hydrant with the love in his heart. Impressed by CrossFit’s results, he became a certified coach to share the experience with others.
At CrossFit Kingdom, he and his team prepare clients for anything by keeping workouts diverse and surprising. Through these dynamic sessions, they help participants develop all dimensions of fitness while minimizing training plateaus. Vidal and his fellow coaches can also scale every exercise to accommodate all fitness levels. All ages are welcome, too, as the coaches train youngsters in their kids and teens program. To supplement workouts, they offer services such as sports massage and nutritional counseling. Discounted rates are available for college students, law enforcement, military, and firefighters.
Whether it’s to get off blood-pressure medication or improve mile times for marathon running, the trainers at My Only BootCamp help clients set and meet specific fitness goals. Though they strive to keep workouts interesting, they readily admit that participants must possess and apply discipline and determination if they want to adequately prepare for Miami’s perpetual beach season. To ensure workouts are always fresh and no two days are identical, they draw upon their vast repertoire of memorized exercise techniques and their smartphones’ ability to Google.
Corpo's classes are taught by 20 experienced instructors, with five different yoga disciplines to choose from. Channel the power of Greyskull with Anusara, which combines body alignment with the positive, light-hearted philosophies of Tantra, or become a human spider with the eight-limbed path of Ashtanga, which uses a fast-paced, intense combination of positions to connect body, mind, and mat. Mysore yoga uses the positions of Ashtanga yoga, but leaves the pace up to the practitioners, creating an atmosphere of inward reflection and exercise. Vinyasa yoga synchronizes breathing and poses to form a vigorous, body-stretching routine based on the Sun Salutations. Meditation, also one of the five principles of yoga, allows students to gain mental clarity, improve concentration, and discover one's insides.
As a community, Green Monkey is thriving. Across its three locations, it's taken on dozens of instructors who lead more than 36 types of classes, including meditation classes that rely on breathing techniques and silent affirmations to quiet the mind. As if all those class varieties weren't enough, the instructors also put together frequent workshops, many of which teach specific skills such as handstands and inverted backbends.
Jennifer Edward, of JustLiveJen Fitness, has developed a boot-camp class that goes beyond the traditional interval training, incorporating mixed martial arts, kick boxing, and lifting into one high-intensity hour. The boot camp, offered three days a week at Stratiform Fitness, complements cardio workouts in the gym’s cardio theater. The 10,000-square-foot facility also holds strength-training equipment and enough dumbbells to weigh down a very large piece of paper.
