As Halloween approaches, a formerly self-sustaining family farm that then became a premier agritourism destination transforms into Cagle's Haunted Barn, a frightening attraction that terrifies guests within their Haunted Barn. Each year brings a new haunted theme, with past stories including a cannibalistic family home and a cursed mental hospital, so even repeat guests will be newly frightened.
Despite having just debuted in 2011, right when corn was invented, Athens Corn Maze entertains huge crowds Thursday–Sunday with its smorgasbord of autumn fun. The 5-acre corn maze includes six stations, and visitors who reach all six are entered into a weekly drawing to win a $25 gift card. Once explorers escape the labyrinth, they give their minds a chance to rest and enjoy nature’s splendor during a hayride that circles around the stalks and through the woods. Next, they abandon the tractor beds to refuel at the concession stand before riding atop a pony and petting the cows, calves, horses, goats and bunnies that reside at the farm. Before departing, kids can take a turn in the bounce house, or visitors try their hands at shelling corn, shucking it straight into a huge pit where kids and parents play.

Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?
In the two hours you spend at Southern Estate Alpacas, we will roll out the Southern Hospitality while teaching you what we call Alpaca 101, where you will learn the origins of alpacas and what they are used for. You will get a tour of our farm store where Groupon guests enjoy a 15 percent discount on any exquisite products made from our elite herd of alpacas.
From there, you will get to meet our friendly fuzzy friends that can’t wait to enjoy a snack right from your hand. This is a great photo opportunity that will look great on your social media page or even the family Christmas card. You will also get introduced to our “fainting” and “baby dwarf” goats. Farm visits are by appointment, so call ahead to reserve your spot.
What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?
Alpacas only have bottom teeth so they can't bite; no horns or hooves, so you don't have to be afraid of them.
What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?
The elite herd of champion alpacas we have on our farm and the exquisite products we offer in our farm store.
At first glance, Pettit Creek Farms looks much the same as other farms. Cows moo and goats bleat from the barnyard, while wagons full of hay and passengers trundle along. But then someone rides by on a camel. A zebra cranes its striped neck over a fence, searching for handfuls of oats, and KatieBird the emu ruffles her feathers at passersby.
It's around the holidays that this unusual farm becomes its most active. In the fall, as the temperature drops and the pumpkin patch ripens, visitors can be seen perusing the squashes and heard trying to navigate the winding corn maze. And, come winter, the farm fires up thousands of Christmas lights, creating a mile-long wonderland for visitors to drive through.
Whether cuddling a tiny spotted piglet, nuzzling a baby goat, or cradling a fuzzy bunny, it's nearly impossible to suppress affectionate coos during a visit to Little Vine Petting Zoo. The zoo abounds with creatures of all kinds, from gentle donkeys to soft alpacas to one spiny hedgehog. Ponies and horses trot down the trail with wee riders on their backs, guests can opt for hay rides, and take pictures inside of rustic stagecoach. Ambling down a tree-lined road, the farm’s colorful train transports guests around the area. The cheerful farm staffers also host bashes onsite and can travel for on-location parties, bringing along ponies and animals to delight guests at birthday parties or confuse bridesmaids at weddings.
As a USDA–licensed petting zoo, the farm owners pride themselves in caring for their animals as an extension of their family. When they’re not introducing their barnyard companions to visitors, the owners breed and show Nigerian dwarf goats as a full-time goat farmers.
