Students at the Stevan Grebel Center for Dance become metaphorical cousins of such legends as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev. That's because Stevan Grebel, like those shining stars, was taught by none other Alexander Pushkin, the headmaster of the Leningrad Choreographic School from the 1940s through the 1960s. But Grebel goes beyond the ancient dance form?and even beyond the stage itself. Students ages 3 and older can sign up not only for jazz, tap, lyrical, and hip-hop dance classes, but also for supplementary programs that cover forms of creative motion such as ice skating, cheering, gymnastics, and yoga. Classes are grounded in the Vaganova ballet technique, a melding of the graceful French style and the more athletic Italian school.
Rhythm N Motion's adult classes, which welcome dancers of all experience levels and backgrounds, include hip-hop fusion, ballroom, and burlesque strip aerobics. Burn calories and mold muscles with burlesque strip aerobics, a total-body workout that emphasizes fun, flirtation, and fitness set to old-school jazz music (no clothes are shed in the class). Ballroom 101 classes teach new techniques every week, regularly featuring the social swirls and shimmies of the tango, hustle, waltz, and foxtrot, and you don't need a partner. Classes are one hour long and are generally held on weekday evenings; click here to see the schedule.
The consortium of professional instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, which was cofounded by the legendary toe tapper himself, shepherds students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the Charleston. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and foxtrot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba. For dancers hoping to hoof it up in a social setting, the group practice parties provide a one-night extravaganza of instruction, demonstrations, and amateur firewalking.
THE POINTE DANCE ARTS in Hoover is proud to be regarded as the Birmingham area's most respected dance school. Our studio provides a fun, family-friendly environment in which your child will learn, laugh, and grow with us for years to come.
Tonya Speed’s Dance Connection has connected restless feet with inspiring rhythms for more than 20 years in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. During one-hour Zumba classes, one of the studio's seasoned instructors coaxes shy dance muscles and hesitant limbs to sway, stomp, and groove to exotic Latin and international music. The sessions, limited to 20 participants, can decrease stress and shake off pesky shoulder anvils. Students should come in fitness attire and comfortable tennis shoes for the upbeat full-body workouts, designed to incinerate calories, drop pounds, increase energy levels, and pound unruly floorboards back into place. Zumba participants must be 12 years of age or older.
Established in 1954 and having garnered the Birmingham magazine 2010 award for Best Dance Classes, Dale Serrano Dance Inc. and its troupe of talented instructors lead children of all skill levels, aged 2–18, in classes ranging from jazz and ballet to hip-hop, tap, and cheer. Budding ballerinas gracefully plié and gallivant about the class, and musical-theater mavens learn the ins and outs of stage performance. Dancers who commit to additional months of vigilant rehearsal and practice can showcase their talents at the year-end recital or opt for impromptu performances at nearby weddings and city-council investitures.
