The skilled staff at Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club presides over a safe thoroughfare for both seasoned shooters and green trigger fingers to hone precision aim. The club houses 12 shooting stations where guests can target earthen wildlife doppelgängers as they fly over two expansive landscapes. The 50 included sporting clays contribute ample ceramic prey, and two boxes of ammunition outfit shooters with appropriate launchibles. Prospective clay-shooting converts can rest assured that target presentations frequently vary, preventing frustrating shooting plateaus.
The readers of Creative Loafing Atlanta voted Stoddard's Range and Guns "Best Shooting Range in Atlanta" in both 2012 and 2013. In addition to the amenities of the range itself, much of the credit for these accolades goes to the NRA-certified instructors, who teach courses such as basic handgun classes. Firearms experts also run the gun shop, where the staffers sell firearms and perform services such as cleaning and scope mounting.
Every Monday night, the Alabama Training Institute & Pistol Range hosts a simulated tactical pistol match, inviting both beginner and experienced shooters to bring their pistols and revolvers to the indoor range. A sense of camaraderie permeates the evening, which is overseen by the staff safety experts. During this time, everyone works together to sharpen shooting techniques and safety skills, improving their scores from match to match. In addition to these events, the instructors teach NRA classes focused on pistols and personal safety.
As the sun rises over the forested wetlands of Dallas County, a group of camouflaged hunters leads dogs to a blind. From their perch, the shooters wait to spot passels of ducks or pheasants. The gunmen raise their rifles. They aim. Then they fire. Their feathered bounty falls from the sky.
Scenes such as this are business as usual during the autumn months at Central Alabama Fowl Preserve. There, staffers help outfit hunters with the amenities needed for a successful day, including a lodge equipped with bedrooms, a kitchen, and a social area where groups can unwind. On the offseason, the preserve opens a skeet-shooting range to help clients keep their aim sharp.
The 90 acres occupied by Advantage Tactical Company seem made for firearms training. The area's hills and valleys create natural sound barriers that reduce noise, and the sprawling grounds allow for several types of shooting?including shotguns, pistols, and rifles. Here, licensed instructors teach NRA firearms classes as well as wilderness-survival techniques. The latter covers topics such as administering CPR and building shelter. During the 3-gun shooting-range experience, participants move through different stages with different firearms, a pistol, a tactical rifle, and a shotgun, and challenges participants to transition between them.
Every now and then, the normal lights at Atlanta Range and Ordnance turn off, the black lights flicker on, and the targets start to glow. These special shoots allow participants to practice firing amid low-light conditions. In addition to these themed activities, the range also hosts bowling-pin shoots and ladies' day every Thursday. Away from the range, instructors lead classroom sessions covering firearms safety and other fundamentals. Back onsite, armorers maintain and customize firearms.
